Between Sleep and Awake is a series of photos documenting the moment of waking. I've orchestrated this group of photos by setting up my camera at the bedside of twenty-five people. A cable release is provided for participants to snap the first thing upon waking. I am not present for the photos.

Between Sleep and Awake captures a second belonging neither to the world of asleep nor the world of awake. The project focuses on the bridge between our two realms of existence - - the conscious and the unconscious. This transition is as quickly forgotten as it is significant. For this project I've solicited participation from outside my social circles. The people presented in these photos are tied together only by their willingness to allow a glimpse into this most private of moments.

Between Sleep and Awake builds upon themes that recur in my work. The project alters the context of a mundane activity -- the moment of waking. Previous projects, A Social Event Archive, Theater, and The Migration Series have focused on everyday elements such as snapshot photos, twist-ties accumulating in the kitchen and plastic bags in trees. My projects also bring together and frame undetermined elements. In Between Sleep and Awake participants determine the precise moment the photo is snapped. In A Social Event Archive the public is invited to contribute one snapshot from their personal collection. The photos are archived in the order received and presented as a traveling exhibition. Another project, A Public Space, invites a group of twenty four people to photographically document the same public space: Main Street Square in Houston, Texas.
