I originally ordered a complete interior from a well known RV upholstery specialist. The seats were well-made and looked good but I thought they were a little too heavy. I was also disappointed that except for the seats, the rest of the interior was a long way from being ready-to-install. Much of the supplied interior was just raw fabric or fabric bonded to foam. It would be up to me to try to convert this material into a finished interior and upholstery is not my long suit!

It just so happens that a good friend, Abby Erdmann, is a very experienced fabricator of boat interiors and has also done a few aircraft interiors for production aircraft. Abby has won numerous awards for her work on luxury yachts. Originally I didn't ask Abby to do my interior because I knew she was very busy and I didn't want to impose. When Abby saw my frustration, she generously offered to help me with my upholstery. After evaluating the interior kit that I had purchased, she decided to start from scratch and came up with a totally fresh approach to an RV interior. A great deal of effort was invested in this project and eventually this resulted in the formation of a new business named Flightline Interiors LLC.

This picture shows the amazingly easy-to-install and very light-weight interior that was made by Abby Erdmann, of Flightline Interiors LLC. The entire interior weighs about the same as the seats alone that I had received previously. The seats shown here do not contain any heavy Confor Foam yet are very comfortable. The prior seats had a 1 inch layer of Confor Foam which added a substantial amount of weight. Abby was just as concerned about keeping the weight to a minimum as I was.

The pictures below demonstrate how easy it is to install the finished pieces of the interior:

The landing gear weldment for the tricycle geared RV-9A is not very pretty and it's irregular shape can be difficult to cover.

Abby's ready-to-install covers fit perfectly and look great. They are attached with velcro so that inspections are no problem. Getting a fit like this didn't just happen. Abby went through many iterations, constantly tweaking the patterns until the various pieces fit perfectly. The very light-weight carpet material works just like "loop" velcro such that the "hook" velcro sewn to the edges of the weldment cover are securely held in place. Semi-rigid, closed-cell foam filler pieces allow the carpet to lie flat in the footwell area and should help to reduce exhaust noise transmitted through the floor. The closed cell foam that is used beneath the carpet resists the tendency to absorb liquids that may find a way in. As mentioned in the Van's Aircraft Builder's Manual, strategically placed drain holes in the bottom skin are a good idea to help prevent accumulation of rain water.

Here are some pictures of the baggage area:

Here the tonneau cover is rolled-up for storage. Note that even the seat backs are fully upholstered. A velcro closure strip on the middle of the seat back makes installation of the seat cover very easy. I decided not to install the hinged seat back supports since nearly every RV owner that I have talked to keeps the seat backs in the rear-most position anyway. If you have installed the hinged support, the seat cover can be slotted to accommodate the brace. The rear baggage bulkhead cover is completely finished and ready to install. The tonneau cover is sewn to it as well.
