Some ESS Styles in America

Style or Type - what is the proper terminology?

It has been drummed into my head by two of my mentors, Henriette Schmidt & Karen Miller, that you should only refer to "type" as it applies to the written standard.  Style should be used when you are describing a certain "look" - as shown below.  Many kennels are known for a certain "style" of dog, these dogs may look a bit different from other kennel's dogs, but they still fit "type" (in other words, the written standard).  The biggest style differences that people see is in the head/expression of the dogs.

I originally wanted to show most of the well known styles of ESS in American today.  Unfortunately, I had to resort to using some pictures that are 5-20 years old.  The best known ESS kennel is probably Salilyn.  I could devote an entire page to how the late Julia Gasow's Salilyn dogs have changed throughout the years (if I had more time I would).  The picture representing Sailiyn is of Robert - Westminster BIS.

This is a <hopefully> representation of the cross section of styles from American as well as Canada.  Many thanks to those that responded to my request for pictures - David Swartwood, Erin Kerfoot, Bertie Nielson, Bev Felten, Melody Carranza, Judi Anderson, and Ann Sunderman.
