The telegram received by the parents of John Hamlin approximately two weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
It is interesting to note that the sender was the office of Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz who would later assume command of the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor.
Also of note is that the telegram dated two weeks after the attack, the Navy Department cautioned the parents not to divulge the name of the ship on which their son was a crewmember, lest the un-named enemy, the Japanese, could gain information about the effectiveness of the attack.
