The Memorial: Shrine Room

At the far end of the Memorial is the Shrine Room. Voices are hushed in reverence at the sight of all the names of the crew of the Arizona, inscribed on the marble wall.

The irregular cut-out shapes in the wall behind the flag is "The Tree of Life" design by the architect Alfred Pries.

Visitors often leave flower Leis while paying their respects. The small rectangular shaped box-like structure (under the flag) displays the names of former survivors of U.S.S. Arizona. They have chosen this method of joining their crewmates. After the death of the survivors, their remains; with the permission and assistance of the United States Navy and the National Park Service, are placed by divers inside gun turret number 2, (not visible from the Memorial) aft of gun turret Number 3. The last such internment was December 7, 2001 when two former crew members were laid to rest in the Arizona.
