West Palm Beach New Horizons Closed

The following are two emails I received from an interested party, stating that the NH West Palm Beach has closed, leaving their students without instruction, and in the case of those who had already paid for classes, without refunds. There is a bit of advice for those students contained herein.

----- First Email -----

I thought you may be interested in learning that the NH of West Palm Beach, FL has abruptly discontinued operations and has locked its doors.

Hundreds of students are affected and will not get the classes they paid for. There is no one on premisis to discuss refunds. All of the teachers and staff were suddenly laid off last Friday afternoon and calls are now greeted by a full voicemail.

Just thought you would like to know.

----- Second Email -----

As for posting my emails (including this one) on your site, you have my permission to do that. Since the staff was laid off this past Friday afternoon, time is of the essence in getting the word out.

I like your attorney idea, but you may want to suggest to the locked-out students that they contact the Florida Commission on Occupation Education in Tallahassee (850)488-9504 to arrange a refund or for their tuition to be applied at a neighboring school. If the neighboring school costs more, I believe they will pick up the difference in tuition. They have an emergency fund specifically set up to insure against illegal school closures.

Many who paid upfront may qualify for reimbursement and/or tuition upgrades.

Thanks for your help in getting this message out to those who need it.

----- End of Emails -----

The "attorney idea" referred to in the second email was my suggestion that if necessary, the affected students would probably do well to hire a lawyer and get after New Horizons Corporate for their refunds. It is, after all, their name on the door.

First, I'd take the emailer's advice and call the Florida Commission on Occupation Education (850) 488-9504 and try to obtain your refund that way. It can't hurt. If you paid by credit card, RUN, don't walk, to the phone and call your credit card company, telling them you wish to place the charge into dispute. You will HAVE to follow this up with a letter IN WRITING to your credit card company telling them the circumstances. They may mail you a form to fill out, or not, but will at least be able to tell you the procedure.
