Console: Control Room
Nexus has recently updated the console to a 80 input console (2 cascaded Yamaha 02R's) that feature total dynamic recall of all functions and moves.
Because the console is all digital, the last analog stage is the microphone itself. This bypasses the A-D (Analog to Digital) converters in the ADAT's which is the weak link in all MDM type recorders, regardless of make and model. The audio is tranmitted direct from the console to tape and back completely in digital. The sound is amazing! The same is true at mixdown; the audio comes out of the ADAT, into the console, all digital, and to the DAT in digital. We have incorporated z-systems sample rate converters to change from 48Khz of the ADAT to 44.1Khz out of the board, so again there are not analog "conversion" done at this step, maintaining the highest level of quality from start of tracking all the way through mixdown.
The automation on this console is second to none.... total dynamic recall of every move, every pan, every EQ change, moving faders, fader grouping, mute grouping, virtually every move you can imagine is saved and recalled!!
Speaking of EQ, again, it is amazing on this console. 4 bands of full parametric, each band able to be set from 20hz-21Khz with Q (bandwidth) for each of the four bands!!
All mixes are archived to a outboard computer for the ability to recall, EXACTLY, the mix you did last week, last month or last year. This flexibility is invaluable; take the mixes you did the night before, listen to them for whatever time you need, and come back and make changes with ease... get back to your mix within seconds!!
Last but not least, the console on compression, limiting, gating, etc. on every input channel for both tape and mic!! That translates to 80 outboard units! The gate is one of the best I have ever worked with!
So, whether you have tracked your project here or at another studio, the mixdown ability Nexus now offers is absolutely second to none!
Mixer: Multimedia Room
In the digital editing / multimedia room, there is a Mackie CR1604 mixer which routes the mastering equipment and is used for voice over work and direct to disk tracking.
Monitors:
The monitors in the control room consist of a pair of EV Sentry 500 mounted in the wall, a pair of Event 20/20 bas powered monitors, and a pair of JBL 4208 near field monitors with a JBL SB5 subwoofer.
For studio playback, there are a pair of modified DLK-2 speakers built into a custom video/audio bay.
In the multimedia / editing room, there are a pair of Event 20/20's, a pair of Yamaha NS-10M speakers, a pair of Auratone 5C sound cubes as well as a pair of Yamaha MS101 powered monitors hooked to the Mac. This enables a wide cross section of monitors to be sampled during the mastering process for your project.
Microphones:
The studio has a variety of mics which are constantly being added to the list. As of this writing we have:
- Neumann: (2) U87's
