Honored with the Special Jury Prize for Artistic Achievement at this year's Sundance Film Festival, Aiyana Elliott's The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack is an extraordinary and remarkably humorous portrait of American folk music legend Ramblin' Jack Elliott.
Shot over the course of two years, this feature length documentary skillfully weaves stellar performances, contemporary verite, candid interviews and a wealth of archival material into a moving and informative story. Never-before-seen footage includes home movies from the Guthrie family's private collection, raw material from master cinema verite pioneers D.A. Pennebaker and Bobby Neuwirth, and clips from a little-seen 1961 Alan Lomax film, Ballads, Blues and Bluegrass. Ramblin' Jack appearances on the Johnny Cash Show and Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest, as well as interviews with Kris Kristofferson, Arlo Guthrie, Dave Van Ronk, Odetta, and several of Jack's ex-wives round out the film.
When filmmaker Aiyana Elliott joins her father on tour, it's with the purpose of documenting the great rambler in action and bringing his story to light. But as father and daughter make their way cross country, the focus of the story turns from the roving cowboy's life on the road to the daughter's search for a dad that was rarely at home. The result is a film that takes us beyond the legend and into the psyche of the man.
