labels and lies
Resources
By Tamlin (Tamlin@mindspring.com)

perhaps your view of the world is so small
that you have to shape people, tell them who and what they are
name them
sort them
categorize them
without much care to see if they agree.
your rigidity darkens your sight.

perhaps your view of me is so narrow
that you must mold my reality, dictate from your pedestal on high
name me
label me
trap me
without seeing the core that makes me whole.
your control silences my voice.

perhaps your fear of me is so great
that you must shout me down, with stoic rage and twisted meanings
scold me
lash out at me
slap me with your words
without understanding that your tongue leaves scars.
your anger stifles my essence.

perhaps my anger at you grows so great
that I must speak up, shatter this mold at all costs
break the traps
shred the labels
silence your voice that echoes within me:

(you're not really a femme.
you're incurably ill.
you need me to take care of you.
you need my permission to do anything.
you owe me.
I own you.)

...without silencing my tears and fury and resolve.
my rage cuts through the lies.

[Unfortunately, most books focusing on domestic violence center on females as the abused, with male perpetrators.  Little has been written on male survivors of domestic abuse, or where women are abusive.  Several books in this reading list broach the subject of same-sex domestic violence.  While this certainly doesn't equate with trans DV, it's much closer than traditional heterosexual violence. Queer DV articles/books are *'ed.]
