A GUIDE/CODE FOR PARSING VERBS AND LOCATING NOUNS

AND ADJECTIVES IN CLASS ASSIGNMENTS

When preparing work for this course (homework or classwork) the following information should be used as the abbreviations for verbs, nouns, and adjectives when needed.

VERBS:

To identify a verb, in addition to the stem, there are five different grammatical features that must be noted: Tense, Voice, Mood, Person and Number. Each of these has different possibilities:

Tense Voice Mood Person Number
Present Active Indicative First Singular
Future Middle Subjunctive Second Plural
Imperfect Passive Imperative Third
lst Aorist   Optative
2nd Aorist
lst Perfect
2nd Perfect
1st Pluperfect
2nd Pluperfect

Thus a Present Active Indicative lst Person Singular can be coded by abbreviating the specific tense, voice, mood, person and number. See the following:

PAI 1PS = Present Active Indicative -- lst Person Singular

PAI 2PS 2nd Person Singular

PAI 3PS 3rd Person Singular

PAI 1PP lst Person Plural

PAI 2PP 2nd Person Plural

PAI 3PP 3rd Person Plural

Some other abbreviations with Verbs in the Indicative:

FAI = Future Active Indicative IAI = Imperfect Active Indicative

1AAI = lst Aorist Active Indicative 2AAI = 2nd Aorist Active Indicative

PftAI = Perfect Active Indicative PIPftAI = Pluperfect Active Indicative

[Note: Other forms (Subjunctive, Imperative and Optative Moods, and

Participles) will be given later in the Course]

NOUNS & ADJECTIVES:

In addition to the root, there are four components used in identifying a Greek noun or adjective: Noun or Adjective; Declension; Case; and Number. Below are the options for each of these:

Noun or Adjective Declension Case Number
Noun = N First = 1 Nominative = N Singular = S
Adjective = A Second = 2 Genitive = G Plural = P
  Third = 3 Dative = D
    Accusative = A
    Vocative = V

Thus the following are options for the First Declension nouns:

lDN NS = lst Declension Noun Nominative Singular

lDN GS = lst Declension Noun Genitive Singular

lDN DS = lst Declension Noun Dative Singular

lDN AS = lst Declension Noun Accusative Singular

IDN NP = lst Declension Noun Nominative Plural

IDN GP = lst Declension Noun Genitive Plural

IDN DP = 1st Declension Noun Dative Plural

lDN AP = lst Declension Noun Accusative Plural

Thus the following are options for the First Declension adjectives:

IDA NS = lst Declension Adjective Nominative Singular

IDA GS = lst Declension Adjective Genitive Singular

IDA DS = lst Declension Adjective Dative Singular

IDA AS = lst Declension Adjective Accusative Singular

IDA NP = lst Declension Adjective Nominative Plural

IDA GP = lst Declension Adjective Genitive Plural

IDA DP = Ist Declension Adjective Dative Plural

IDA AP = lst Declension Adjective Accusative Plural

Some Examples of Other Declensions:

2DN NS = 2nd Declension Noun Nominative Singular

3DN NS = 3rd Declension Noun Nominative Singular

2DA NS = 2nd Declension Adjective Nominative Singular

3DA NS = 3rd Declension Adjective Nominative Singular
