Maurice Dake sent me a (huge) family file which contained the following: Elias Dake: Arrived from Ireland in the ship "Pennsylvania Farmer" and petitioned for land on Jan 6, 1773 in Craven Co. SC on branch of Congaree River, called Seder Creek. When questioned about the source of this information, Maurice didn't know where it came from. Apparently someone had sent it to him. While traveling in South Carolina in November 2000 I went to the South Carolina State Archives in Columbia, SC to verify this information. After viewing microfilm I checked out the original ledger and carefully read through the land petitions for January 6, 1773 but could not find any reference to Elias Dake. I also checked the Ledger's adjoining pages to see if Elias Dake appeared anywhere near the referenced entry but could not find any reference to him. This is what I did find: o Yes there was a ship "Pennsylvania Farmer". o Yes there were petitions for land on Jan, 6 1773 (with reference to the ship). o Yes there was a Craven Co. in South Carolina in 1773. (Later broken up into smaller counties) o Yes there is a Cedar Creek branching into the Congaree River. o Yes there is a reference to Elias Dake in land records of a neighbor. (See below) A computer search for "Dake" produced the following: DAKE, EDWARD DAKE, EDWARD, PLAT FOR 400 ACRES IN GRANVILLE COUNTY 1763/03/17 DAKE, ELIAS LOGAN, JOHN, PLAT FOR 400 ACRES IN CRAVEN COUNTY 1773/06/20 LOGAN, JOHN, MEMORIAL FOR 400 ACRES ON CEDAR CREEK 1775/07/03 AND CONGAREE RIVER, CRAVEN COUNTY. Upon obtaining the document for Edward Dake it turned out to be "Edward Dickie" NOT Edward Dake; a miss-indexed entry. Also Upon finding the documents for John Logan it is not clear (to me) that the name is actually Logan as it appears more as "Logue" in the script. Upon obtaining the documentation for John Logan I found a plat and description for 400 acres of land referencing Elias Dake land adjoining the 400 acres on the East side The plat is dated June, 20 1773. The second document is a ledger entry containing an 8-line hand written memorial for the same 400 acres of land and also refers to Elias Dake land on the East side of the 400 acres. This entry is dated July 3, 1775. The microfilm of the memorial is clear but I had trouble with some of the language! (see below) The microfilm of the plat is very difficult to read but the name "Elias Dake" is very clear. I penciled over a copy to make it more readable and transcribed the text (see below). -- Owen C. South Carolina on June 6th 1773. It is likely (although not positive) that he was still on the land July 20, 1775. "In the federal census of 1880, William A. Dake of Miller County, Missouri, gives the birthplace of his parents as South Carolina." -- Dake Families of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri -- Leslie A. Green, 1972 William's Parents were Jonathan and Rebecca (Atkinson) Dake of Meigs County, Tennessee. If Jonathan was born in South Carolina about 1790 it puts him very close to Elias Dake of South Carolina (15 yrs) and is worth further investigation to determine if there is a link. -- Owen C.
