The English spelling was Coffield (this would be found in records written by English scribes) 1752 Land Transaction: Warrant 4 April 1752 for survey of 400 acres of land by Lord Fairfax, Governor of the Virginia Colony. 1754: Land Transaction: Christopher Coffield assigns deed of 400 acres to Peter Coffield. 1766 Land Transaction: Peter Coffield (first husband of Catharine Haller) was granted a Land Patent of 400 acres on the southside of Stoney Creek , Fredrick Co., Virginia on 1 Aug. 1766 by Lord Fairfax. -- Northern Neck of Virginia Land Grants - Book N, pg. 72 - Virginia Archives. -- Haller, Hollar, Holler Genealogy - page 22 1767 Dake Genealogy: Peter Coffelt, Sr., father of Catharine Coffelt dies on May 29, 1767 in Frederick Co., VA. Son, Peter Coffelt Jr. becomes the legal heir of the 400 acres of land. 1768 Dake Genealogy: Catherine (Haller) Coffelt, widow of Peter Coffelt Sr. marries Jacob Surber on April 10, 1768 in Frederick Co., VA. 1772 Political Events: Dunmore County Virginia is formed from Frederick Co., VA. It is named in honor of the Governor. 1776 Political Events: The Declaration of Independence signed July 4 at Philadelphia follows military action in the American Revolution. 1778 Political Events: SHENANDOAH COUNTY VA was named for the river. The county was first named Dunmore, in honor of the governor, when it was formed from Frederick in 1772. The present name was given in 1778. Its land area is 507 square miles, and the county seat is Woodstock. 1785 Dake Genealogy: December 04, 1785 John Dake Sr. marries Catharine Coffelt in Shenandoah Co., VA. Note: This was in Washington Co., VA according to James Emmit Dake. 1801 Land Transaction: John Dake Sr. buys 100 acres of land from Peter Coffield (Coffelt) Jr. -- Shenandoah Co., VA - Deed Book M Page 340, 341, 342 - March 9, 1801 Note: This is on the north end of the 400 acre estate of Peter Coffelt Sr. 1813 Dake Genealogy: Magdalene Dake, daughter of John Sr. & Catharine (Coffelt) Dake, marries Peter Holler Sr. on June 08, 1813 in Shenandoah Co., VA at age 23. 1815 Dake Genealogy: John Dake Sr. dies in Shenandoah Co., VA on September 12, 1815. Note: Burial place is undetermined at this time. Possibly on the 100 acres owned by John and Catharine (Coffelt) his wife or on the 400 acre estate of Catharine's father, Peter Coffelt Sr. or in a local Cemetery. 1817 Dake Genealogy: John Dake Jr., son of John Sr. & Catharine (Coffelt) Dake, marries Catharine Bowman on May 23, 1817 in Shenandoah Co., VA at age 26. Catharine is 15 yr, 10 mo of age. 1818 Dake Genealogy: Son Daniel Dake is born to John Dake Jr. and Catharine (Bowman) on March 21, 1818 in Shenandoah Co., VA. 1819 Dake Genealogy: Son John Jackson Dake is born to John Dake Jr. and Catharine (Bowman) on November 14, 1819 in Shenandoah Co., VA. 1821 Dake Genealogy: Son Benjamin J. Dake is born to John Dake Jr. and Catharine (Bowman) on December 11, 1821 in Shenandoah Co., VA. 1822 Dake Genealogy: Catharine (Coffelt) Dake dies in Shenandoah Co., VA. Note: Burial place is undetermined at this time but presummably with husband John Dake Sr. 1823 Land Transaction: Daniel Bowman and Anna (Reiser) his wife transfer 182 acres of land to Christian Reiser on September 7, 1823. Note: Daniel and Ann (Reiser) Bowman are the parents of Catharine (Bowman) Dake, wife of John Dake Jr. 1823 Land Transaction: John Dake Jr. and Catharine (Bowman) his wife sell 100 acres of land to Henry Long. -- Shenandoah Co., VA - Deed Book CC Pages 352, 353 dated Sept. 17, 1823. 1824 Dake Genealogy: Daughter Elizabeth Dake is born to John Dake Jr. and Catharine (Bowman) on May 25, 1824. Note: Location could have been Shenandoah Co., VA or Ohio or somewhere on the road to Shelby Co, IN. 1826 Dake Genealogy: Son Frederick Dake is born to John Dake Jr. and Catharine (Bowman) on March 13, 1826 in Ohio (according to Census data). Note: Highland Co., OH would be a likely place since some of the Shenandoah Co., VA folks were believed to be there (Surber, Fansler). John Dake Jr.'s Grandmother, Catharine (Haller) (Coffelt) Surber may have died and been buried here also. 1826 Land Transaction: John Dake Jr. is listed in "EARLY LANDOWNERS of SHELBY COUNTY INDIANA" by Maurice Holmes dated October 31, 1826. 1828 Dake Genealogy: Son William "Bill" Dake is born to John Dake Jr. and Catharine (Bowman) Abt.
