                Pre-Season Perdiction

Stringing along with Lincoln is a favorite pastime of City conference
high school basketball coaches this season- and for good reason. Coach
Jim Smallins' Comets have four starters back from then state and city
championship team of last year which won 25 of 26 games. One of the
starters, 6 foot 4 inch John Rushing is a midyear graduate but three
others regulars- Larry Thomas, Fred Brown, and Clarence Sherrod are back
for the entire year. Smallins himself has no qualms about picking
Lincoln to repeat as city champion but add this footnote: "The first
semester should be real good for us. However, we will have to be on the
lookout in the second semester. Lincoln has six letter men in all, with
Ellis Turrentine, 6-1 and Knute Herrmann back in addition to the four
regulars. There are some good prospects coming up from last year's
champiohship freshman-sophomore team,among them Dave Hickenbottom, a
6-2 sophomore center. Sherrod, Brown, and Rushing finished eighth,
ninth, and tenth in city scoring last season and were Lincoln's three
leading point makers. Lincoln was the leader in team scoring, in shooting
percentages and ranked second on defense. Small wonder that the coaches
are handing the championship to Lincoln on a preseason platter.
