The Firebird powered by an M-2200 AMW

Firebird / M-2200

In May 2005 my Firebird splashed down for the first time. Using an AMW M-2200 Skidmark Motor, the Firebird reached an altitude of about 4400 feet. This 75mm motor has about 7000 NS and is in the Mid M range. With it's burn time of only about 3 seconds, the 7000 NS puts on a fantastic show as the Firebird reached 400 mph very quickly. Those watching on the monitors in the Rockets for School mission control reported they could feel vibrations inside the building about 2000 feet to the west. This was the first launch of the Firebird with this motor. The M-845 Hybrid reload I usually use in the Firebird has not been available the last four years because of the Areotech fire. Everything went perfectly re-entry wise, and the landing was just east of the pier where the Cost Guard picked it up. Special thanks to AMW, Frank Nobile and Dan Byra for use of equipment, Chuck Nozika the AMW hardware, Dave Zupan for the finest Launch Pad in the midwest, everyone who helped on launch morning, and Bill Bertoldi for the spectacular photos.

Did You Know?

I recently built a plastic non flying model of a 1/48 scale Jupiter-C rocket and Explorer-1, the first US satelite to orbit the earth. In doing a little reasearch on the original mission, I was surprised to learn that AP based solid propellant motors were used in all but the first stage. I did not realize AP has been in use since the 1950's. The Explorer-1 Satellite (the fourth stage) contained a solid rocket motor which I estimate to be about the size of an Aerotech N-2000. See a model in my Plastic Models section.

Launched a couple seasons ago at Bong, this Mercury Redstone used an Aerotech M-2400 motor to lift the 100lb beautiful model to a perfect flight, see the photo's in the Bong Gallery. This creation by Gary Pletzer uses PML's 11"+ tubing, and stands about 14' tall. Gary used an Xtreme rail for the big event. The Blue Thunder motor has flame and smoke very much like the real redstone. This was probably the most realistic launch Bong has ever had.

Amy's Brutus

The maiden flight of Amy Casper's Rocket R&D Brutus at Bong Recreation Area in Wisconsin. Amy used a Dr. Rocket 38mm 240 motor & an Aerotech H123 W reload with a medium delay. The flight was a success.

Brutus Launch
The third flight of Amy's Brutus cleared the pad on an Aerotech I-161W reload at NARAM 40. About one second later, a spectacular CATO ended the flight. The upper section of the booster had to be replaced and the forward closure of the Dr. Rocket 38-360 motor was damaged.
