Deep in the Heart of Texas.
Dear
Friends, again this year Simeon, Mamasita and I
packed and headed south as snowbirds to hang out at my sister’s place for the months
of February and March. I found myself a job helping out for Sunday
Masses in Freeport on the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a blue collar town
filled with oil refineries. The parish is named Mary, Star of the Sea. They had
a wonderful pastor who suddenly died in January, and I came down just at a very
needful moment.
The parish is strongly Latino and it radiates with that kind of culture. The
people were wonderfully receiving of me, and I quickly felt at home. I was
happy to keep up the task of homilizing, because it’s
easy to loose the feel for it, and it’s also easy to so enjoy being free of
such a burden that you don’t want to take it up again. Here are the homilies
delivered deep in the heart of Texas.
