Q. 5/25/00
I have a question regarding a 41 year old male
friend of mine who is in
excellent condition; he has been active all of
his life (tennis and skating
national champion and still participates in both
sports today). He appears
to have a nutritionally sound diet, doesn't smoke
cigarettes (although
sometimes i have wondered whether his girlfriend
and him smoke weed...but
that's none of my business.)
He revealed to me that he had a check up recently,
and a polyp was found on
his vocal cord. Now, as long as I've known
him, approx. 10 years, he has
always had a distinctive, raspy voice that I
actually found to be quite
sexy, however, now it appears that this rasp
may be the result of a medical
condition.
What is the typical course of action for this
condition? What is the
prognosis? Is this something (if surgery
is the recourse) that he should
tend to immediately?
A. Sounds like it's a benign vocal cord nodule.
Usually when they are 1st discovered, the ENT doctor, examines the area
and takes a biopsy. And if the biopsy is negative (as this one sounds like),
they will sometimes 1) remove it, or 2) observe it over time.
If the benign nodule is in a 'critical' / speech sensitive area,
then it most likely will be observed. I would strongly recommend
he follow the doctors instruct. re: follow-up examinations....It
is usually recommended to have a recheck in THIS circumstance ~ q 6 - 12
months.. He's had this for a Long time,,,,,,,
The course of a malignant vocal cord lesion is usually
VERY rampant. I mean it is F A S T to spread (weeks - months)!

Q. I've got these MIGRAINES,, and info you can give me.
A. I just wanted to say thank for the article
on Zomig. It was very
informative and helpful. This must be the time of year when migraines
are more frequent because just recently I've had 2 occurrences of migraines.
I ask my doctor for a prescription and it just so happen; she happen to
have samples. So stay tune I will let you know what the final results are.
Thanks very munch!
