Hypothyroidism
Another issue that is common across many breeds, hypothyroidism simply means low levels of thyroid hormone. Symptoms develop gradually and may take months to become apparent. Specific symptoms associated with the disorder include poor hair coat, lethargy, intolerance to cold temperatures, and weight gain among others. Treatment involves daily medication and routine testing which is often done annually, but may be more frequent as needed by the particular animal. Field Spaniels used for breeding should have their thyroid function checked at 2 years of age and 6 years of age at the minimum as is recommended by the breed parent club.

Seizure Disorders
Over the past several years, it has become apparent that there may be a problem of late-onset seizure disease in Field Spaniels. Anecdotal reports indicate that there is a small group of Field Spaniels who have experienced seizures that occur starting at age 8 years or older. At this time, it is not know whether or not this represents a statistical incidence that is greater than what would be expected in the general population of dog, and many of the dogs reported have had other health issues known, though some have not. Seizure disorders, in general, have been difficult to pinpoint to a precise cause although progress has been made.
