Welcome to

Dave's labor history pages

The purpose of this site is to give you, the reader, an insight into what was going on during the may labor strikes of 1886. From Chicago to Milwaukee and all accross the United States business came to standstill as ships were waiting to unload at almost every port in the country. Railroads came to a sudden stop as steel workers, carpenters, and other tradesmen refused to come to work until everyone got the eight hour day with no reduction in pay.

In order for us to understand why, we must remember that as the immigrants were coming over they brought with them the idea of socialism, the belief that a social class dictated the production and distribution of goods, the belief that everyone worked for the benefit of all. As opposed to captilism which believes that Private Enterprise should control the production and distribution of goods, or communism in which the government controls the economical situation.
