SUMMARY

R&D Electronic Design Engineer with emphasis on embedded control; microprocessor hardware and firmware. Accomplished in all phases of product life cycle, including concept, requirements, design, serial production, field support, and project management for a variety of industries.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

COOPER POWER SYSTEMS, Franksville and South Milwaukee, WI 1997 to Present
Utility protective equipment manufacturer
Advanced Design Engineer
Responsible for digital hardware design in micro-based protective relay.
  • Achieved reductions of over 30% in cost and 65% in failure rate by converting 4 boards from through-hole to SMT. Supervised conversion of 4 more, bringing into compliance with company specs (eliminated jumpers, obsolete components).
  • Analyzed corporate spec for conformal coating of pcbs, adding new requirement for extreme humidity. Tested boards, re-drafted and released spec.
  • Converted electro-mechanical relay control to solid-state, programmable control. Wrote specification, completed hardware design and release of documentation. Assembled and tested prototype unit in time for trade show.
  • Re-designed product to comply with UL/CE/IEC safety/environmental/EMC standards.
  • Assimilated 14-board, partially documented protective relay into employer's MRP system.
  • Tested and certified new board to IEEE C37.90-2 standard.
  • Responsible for coordinating product shipments, MRP planning, purchase orders and part substitutions of acquired product for four months.
EDSTROM INDUSTRIES, INC, Waterford, WI 1996 to 1997
Animal watering products manufacturer.
Senior Project Engineer
Designed hardware and software of micro-based watering, and environmental monitoring systems.
  • Developed and released company’s first dimming fluorescent light control; speech-enabled modem. Designed and built functional demo unit for company booth at trade show under ambitious time constraints. (Also worked in booth.)
  • Designed byte-wide flash memory with write-(un)protect/ capability. Wrote, tested, and released device drivers for application program to access feature.
OMNION POWER ENGINEERING CORPORATION, East Troy, WI 1993 to 1996
Solid state inverter manufacturer.
Project Engineer
Responsible for hardware and software design of micro-based control boards in company's latest line of intelligent inverters.
  • Took multiple control boards from concept to schematic, pcb place & route, software design in c and assembly, documents for serial production and test.
  • Retrofitted design a year later to run on 50 Hz systems. Opened European market.
  • Hired back as consultant to trouble-shoot installed system, modified software to provide remote diagnostics, located and corrected problem without ever visiting installation.
  • As System Administrator, maintained 20+ node network critical to productivity.
  • Implemented virus control & automated backups. Connected firm to Internet for 10% of industry standard cost, support e-mail, WWW, UseNet, & ftp.
CAMTRONICS MEDICAL SYSTEMS, LTD., Hartland, WI 1991 to 1993
Medical image processing equipment manufacturer.
Design Engineer
Accountable for design of proprietary interface boards between x-ray equipment and image processor to improve image quality.
  • Designed and produced four interface boards improving time to production by 33% to meet on-site, changing requirements of customers.
  • Authored a program utility to improve speed by 300% and reduce errors by 25% in data entry of bills of material.
Prior to 1991
Held progressively responsible positions as R&D Staff Engineer, Digital Design Engineer, and Software Engineer for companies including Texas Instruments, Lovejoy Electronics, and ABB Industrial Systems.
  • Completed design of all digital hardware (including 1000-gate custom IC) in company's first digital motor controller, reduced part count, cost by 30% and failure rate from 20% to less than 1% in compressed time schedule. Earned award for meeting all deadlines.
  • Supervised production line start-up, overcoming documentation and budget constraints, receiving commendation.
  • Isolated and corrected, in co-operation with Intel, a design flaw in a microcontroller which was causing product to fail in field.
