Subject: Camping fee at Pictured Rocks
There's a flat fee of $15 for backpacking campsites at Pictured Rocks now.
Doesn't matter if you camp one night or the two week limit, it's still $15.
The Apostle Islands Lakeshore has an identical charge this year, so I suspect
it applies to the National Lakeshores in general. I don't know of any other
National Lakeshores, but I guess there must be.
You might want to add the Superior
Hiking Trail in Minnesota to your list of great Midwestern hikes. This
summer I did pieces of the SHT, the
Porkies, and Pictured Rocks, and I'd hate to have to choose one over
the others. Side trips up the Kadunce River canyon, or some gorges on the
Devil Track River are a real treat, too. (Don't walk the riverbed when fish
eggs or fry might get squished, though.)
Dan at Superior Shuttle (218) 834-5511 is a good guy to talk to about the
trail. Affordable shuttle service, food drops, all the stuff lazy hikers
like me enjoy. He's based in the SHT Headquarters in Two Harbors, MN.
