A hands-on workshop featuring
Casey Jones' Whistle

This two-chime train whistle was developed as a response for a folk toy project that could be included as part of "Winterthing". the Grand Forks, North Dakota Park District's 1995 multicultural children's festival.

Coupled with the lore and music that surrounds Casey Jones' wonderful piece of American railroad history, it has proven to be a popular workshop, and has been featured at many festivals, schools, and railroad oriented venues from Vancouver to New York state.

"and it's not just for kids"

This two hour workshop can be easily tailored for...

"the people could tell by the engine's moan,
the man at the throttle was Casey Jones"

In this two hour workshop, each participant builds a wooden train whistle to take home, and learns through story and song how Casey Jones became a part of American railroad history.

The whistle consists of 5 parts, One each: bottom, top, mouth piece, and two reeds.

The student's task will be to remove any feather with fine sandpaper; align, and glue in place one reed in each chime groove; glue mouthpiece in place; determine the best blow-out hole gap through trial and error; (suggested point will be marked) glue and clamp, and test once more before glue sets.

Setup time for the glue is about 1/2 hour.

This period provides time for presentation of Casey Jones the song, and how he became a true American legend.

The final task will be to remove the clamps; sand all joints, and champher (round) all edges; first with #120 sandpaper; then with #220. A crack and peel label containing a few whistle codes is available for application to each whistle. (Some adult assistance may be required)
