SUGGESTED SPECIFICATIONS FOR CLEANING NEW MASONRY

4.01    General Conditions..............................


4.02  Scope -  After construction of the masonry wall, both the exterior and interior masonry should thoroughly be cleaned to remove excess mortar, stains and foreign matter using a highly inhibited solution of blended liquid acids emulsified in combination with special wetting agents.

WORK  -  Shall be comprised of  furnishing all labor and materials with required equipment for the cleaning of all surfaces noted on  the drawings and in these specifications:
    a.  Brick and tile masonry.
    b.  Concrete - precast, cast in place, cast
          stone.
    c.  Stone - unpolished natural, limestone,
        (where noted).

4.03  Related under other sections:
a.  Caulking
b.  Waterproofing

4.04  Materials - Masonry cleaning products shall be "Diedrich Technologies Detergent 200, 202, 202V Vana-Stop" as manufactured by Diedrich Technologies Inc., Oak Creek, WI.  Specific Diedrich Product selection will depend on final selection of brick and/or stone and in strict accordance with manufacturer's instruction.

APPROVALS -  A test area of wall surface a minimum of 10 square feet in size must be cleaned with the recommended Diedrich _____ New Masonry Cleaning Product for the inspection and approval of the Architect.  Samples on adjacent non-masonry materials must be conducted for possible adverse reaction with the diluted cleaning product.  The samples must be available for inspection and approval by the architect.

4.05  Preparation - Surface to be cleaned shall be carefully pointed and any holes or cracks must be filled with mortar.  Any excess mortar must be removed using wooden paddles and scrapers, no metal is to be used.  After topping-

out of a masonry wall section a minimum of 7 to 28 day drying period shall be allowed before commencing cleaning process.

4.06  Application - An adequate supply of water must be available to insure a thorough pre-soaking and rinsing of the wall is accomplished prior to general cleaning.  A thorough pre-soaking with clean water of all surfaces are required to prevent the absorption of the cleaning solution into the pores of the masonry.

The Diedrich New Masonry Cleaning Product is to be diluted with clean water and applied to the presoaked area of wall with a soft bristled masonry wall washing brush or low pressure (40-50 p.s.i. maximum) acid resistant sprayer, per the manufacturer's printed instructions.  A flushing with copious amounts of clean water is to follow.

Windows, doors and trim areas, etc., must be protected per the architects direction.

NOTES FOR THE SPECIFIER - NEW MASONRY CLEANING

1.  Pre-soaking:    All surfaces are to be thoroughly  pre-soaked with water to prevent absorption of cleaning solution into the pores of the masonry.  (For large multi-story buildings the following should be part of the specification) Para. 4.06:  Two hoses shall be used during the cleaning process.  A lawn soaker hose should be placed along the top of the wall to ensure a complete and uniform pre-soaking of the area to be cleaned.  A second hose shall be used to provide a flow of water to insure a thorough flushing from the cleaned area of excess mortar and dirt.  After top area is cleaned the lawn soaker hose should be fitted to the face of the scaffold/stage to ensure a continuous wetting of areas below that being worked on.

2.  Movement of moisture to exterior wall surfaces will carry metallic oxides and soluble salts causing efflorescence and stains.  Cleaning solutions will clean and remove deposits
