Towing, referred to by some insurance companies as Emergency Road Service, is an optional coverage under the automobile insurance policy. You must specifically add this coverage to your policy and pay a premium for the coverage for it to apply to each of your vehicles. It is NOT automatically included. Also, most insurance companies require you also carry at least Comprehensive coverage on any vehicle you wish to provide Towing coverage.
Towing provides a specific limit, usually $50 or $75, for reimbursement of the cost you may incur when your covered vehicle is disabled due to mechanical failure or accident and must be towed to another location to be repaired.
Towing will also reimburse you for the cost of having fuel brought to you if you should run out of gas or for minor repairs that can be made at the scene of your disablement, such as having a flat tire changed, needing assistance in starting your car in cold weather or having locked your keys in your car.
