The Richards Engineering Group, Ltd.

Any Time! Any Place!

The Richards Engineering Group, Ltd. (TREGL) consists of professionally skilled scientists, engineers, and technicians, all highly experienced in Project Planning, Design, Development, Construction, Construction Management, Business Plans, and Project Financing both in the United States and throughout the world.

Dr. E.A. Richards, P.E.

The Richards Engineering Group operates as follows:

1. Where financing is already in place, we will contract with the client to provide all phases of professional engineering design for a given project as required for successful development, subsequently furnishing the client with professionally produced plans, drawings, and pertinent documents necessary to implement the project.

2. When a client is seeking project financing, TREGL begins by contracting with the client to develop a comprehensive marketing Business Plan preparatory to the engineering phase. This marketing Business Plan is crucial in the process of applying to lenders and investors to obtain the funding necessary for any project. TREGL is not itself in the business of financing projects, but will provide to the client the most appropriate marketing Business Plan documents critical to the quest for such financing. The usual breakdown for a project is 35% of total provided by the client and 65% of total provided by the funders.

3. When project financing is in place, and after project design is complete, TREGL will contract with the client to provide all construction and/or construction management to successfully build and place the project on line. If desired by the client, TREGL will monitor and oversee production operations for a period set by the client.

4. Please carefully read the TREGL Policy Document, the First Agreement Document, and the TREGL Marketing Business Plan as noted in the following attachments:

Some Typical Richards Group Projects

1. Brewery Projects:

Richards Group members were Consultants to a major United States brewery for a production upgrade of from 3 to 7 million barrels per year in an existing brewery in the southwest, and five new breweries in the US, each with a maximum annual production capacity of 10 million barrels.

Efforts included engineering on basic brewery design and layout, construction, and equipment procurement for the following: Grains unloading, storage, and transport; Brewhouse design and operation; Cold service facility; Fermentation; Aging; High-speed packaging; Spent grains handling; Utilities, including power house boiler systems for process steam and electrical co-generation; System design packages for process mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation; Construction packages; and all other engineering, construction, and construction management necessary to build a new, efficient, productive brewery.

2. Methane Generation Plant Project:

This facility was designed to accommodate a beverage plant's effluent flow of 6 million gallons per day of a stream with a Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) loading of about 3500 mgl. The Group acted as engineers and construction managers, working with Dr. Rob Sax of Biothane and their version of the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket system (UASB) originally created and developed by Professor G. Lettinga of the Netherlands. At a full load of 6 million gallons of wastewater per day, and maximum efficiency, the system can achieve a 90% reduction in COD and an output of about 680 cubic feet per minute of methane. At present the plant handles nearly 4 million gallons of wastewater per day which can produce at maximum efficiency a methane flow approximating 450 cubic feet per minute.

3. Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) Project:

The Group was responsible for engineering layout design and procurement of this unique and efficient aerobic treatment plant installed at a US dairy complex. Employed was the state of the art SBR technology developed in Australia, supplied by US Division of the Austgen Biojet Corporation, and was constructed by Great Lakes AquaStores. The project Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) goal was a reduction in loading down to less than 10 mgl, and was successfully achieved, thus allowing the cleansed effluent to pass directly into the environment.

4. Business Plans & Finance:

The Group efforts resulted in business plans, signed contracts, and submissions to investors and lenders at both the local and international level for the Asian/Pacific Rim power plant, baby food plant, and real estate development projects, along with developing and submitting techniques for specific privatization and growth strategies.

5. Electrical and Instrumentation Projects:

The Group has completed over a hundred projects dealing with power generation, lighting, alarms, transformers, substations, transmission lines, and similar efforts, for major industrial and commercial applications.

6. Steel Shredder Arm Project:

The shredder machine itself was a vertical feed unit, in which junked steel household appliances and light steel assemblies were conveyed down into a chamber where a high speed rotating arm with hardened steel breakers tore them apart against a wall of hardened steel plates, thus converting the assemblies into small pieces of steel, very high in demand as recycled material for use by steel mills.

When light steel assemblies were fed into the shredder, there was no problem; however, when automobile frames, with or without motors and transmissions, were fed into the shredder, the original shredder arm fractured, severely damaging the machine, and completely halting shredder production.

After a detailed analysis of the forces involved, a completely new shredder arm was designed, by the Group, capable of efficiently shredding entire autos and light trucks, even those with motors and transmissions not removed from the vehicles. The shredder, with its redesigned arm, is the largest vertical unit in the world, and is operating well.

7. Underground Storage Tank Removal Project:

The project involved the removal of several underground storage tanks from industrial property in accordance with rules and regulations of the various states in which the properties were located. The types of tank contents included organics ranging from fuel oil to highly volatile solvents.

The sequence of events was as follows: Soil borings were made in the tank area to determine if any leakages or spillages had occurred, thus contaminating adjacent soil. Next, residual tank contents were removed in accordance with proper practice, cleaned out thoroughly, and the tanks certified as such by qualified personnel.

During excavation, periodic hnu meter checks were made. If contamination was indicated, then the excavated soil was stored temporarily on heavy plastic sheeting in a designated safe area, and securely covered with the same material. Where there was no contamination, the excavation was refilled with the removed soil and/or clean fill. Where contamination existed, the soil in the area was excavated to the point where hnu meter readings in the area did not exceed legal limits. When this level was attained, the excavation was filled with clean soil. The discarded tanks were then cut apart according to good practice and taken off-site for proper disposal by licensed haulers. Any contaminated soil stored was transported to a suitable site where it was brought to acceptable levels utilizing an economical process developed by Dr. Richards. All documents required by the states and/or other authorities were completed and submitted.

Cutting processing plant operating costs:

If your company discharges a high-carbohydrate wastewater stream, and is subject to high sewer charges, and high energy bills, the Richards Engineering Group offers a way to reduce both to enjoy a significant cost savings. The Group's approach is to sequence an anaerobic methane generation system and an SBR aerobic system that can reduce ultimate loading down to a level of less than 10 mgl. The methane can be used to fuel a boiler for process steam, or used directly by an engine-generator to provide power, as shown in the simplified flow diagram:

If you wish to learn what savings can be gained for your plant, fax or e-mail to us the following information:

  • Type of carbohydrate flow (Food plant, brewery, etc.):

  • Effluent flow in gallons per day:

  • Effluent loading (BOD or COD) in ppm or mgl:

  • Sewer charge rates:

  • Cost of power per kilowatt:

  • Cost of natural gas per therm:

We will integrate the data into our computer program and return the preliminary results to you as soon as is possible. Please be explicit in your request.
