Currency Sheet - Currency Summary — Stock Tracking Project Sheet — Last Year's Schedule — Fall 2003 — Spring 2004

Current Event Fridays

On each Friday that the class meets students may give an Oral Report on a recent (in print) Current Event. The article must be printed and no more than 7 days old. It must be the original printed article from a newspaper or magazine. No photocopies or Internet articles are acceptable. The article must be at least 3 inches in length and contain three economic vocabulary words that the student had not previously used in an oral report.

Each original article will be attached to an 8½ x 11 inch sheet of white paper. The student will place their name at the top, along with the name of the publication, date of publication along with 3 economic terms appearing in that article. This sheet must be turned into the assignment bin prior to the ringing of the bell beginning the class. No late papers.

When the title is read, the student will come to the front of the class and give their Current Event Report by stating their name, the source and date of Publication, the title of the article and the author's name. They will then give their three economic terms and the correct meaning of each. They will then give an oral report on what was in the article to the class. They will ask if there are questions. After answering all questions about the article they should thank the class for listening. The class should applaud. The student will then read the title and only the title of the next article.

After completing all the current event reports for the day the student will turn the reports into the instructor stating their name and the number of reports. The teacher will verify the name, the number of reports today and the total number of Reports for the quarter. Current Event Reports that do not meet the standards stated will not receive points.

Students may do no more than three (3) reports on any Friday. All Students must do a minimum of five (5) reports per quarter. They may do up to a maximum of 10 reports per quarter. No reports will be acceptable at other times. If school is canceled and no class is held on Friday then their will be no Current Event Friday that week. DO NOT DELAY getting the minimum of five (5) reports completed. A Current Event Friday log sheet shall be keep by the student to make a record of their Current Event Reports and vocabulary. Extra Current Event Log Sheets are available in the bin in the classroom. Current Event Log Sheets will be collected after the last Friday of that quarter.

Also you will prepare a research paper on 4 of the stocks that you tracked. This will be done (one a week) beginning on the 3th Friday after the stock tracking. You will also obtain an in print copy (hard copy) of the annual report (a minimum of 4 different companies) which is due the Friday of the last report. If you obtain more than 4 (limited to stocks you tracked) you can obtain extra credit. Lots of externalities on this one so don't wait until the last moment to do this. The annual Reports can be used as a source on your Research Papers on that company. You are limited to the stocks you have tracked daily for four consecutive weeks. Stock tracking is an individual assignment and is not part of the SMS activity.

You are to order an annual report for each company you are tracking, these reports are due on the sixth Friday following the stock tracking. Addresses can be found on the internet. There are links to Stock Report Services on my Economics Web Page, where some of the annual reports may be ordered.

You are to prepare a Stock Recommendation Report more than 2 pages in length with a separate reference page informing the reader about each of the four companies you have tracked. The first report will be due on the 3rd Friday after your stock tracking ends and one report is due on each of the following Fridays. You will also have a reference page with four (4) sources listed that you referred to in preparing your report, three (3) of those must be in-print (book, magazine, newspaper, Not the Internet). None of these or anything in your report can be more than one year old. You are to inform the reader about what the company is, what they are currently doing, their business plan, their products, their competitors, how they are doing and end your reports with a recommendation on rather you would advise the reader to buy or not at the current price levels.

On the sixth Friday your in-print annual reports are due. On the sixth Friday, any extra credit reports you choose to do will be collected. (Extra credit at 25% point value). No late reports will be accepted after that Friday. Of course if a snow day occurs that Friday Due date will be moved to the following Monday. Reports can be turned in anytime during that week before but Friday is the absolute deadline. Anything not turned in by Friday will be counted late. The Evaluation Form for Stock Reports is the same as all essays and a detailed grading sheet is linked to from the econweek page http://my.execpc.com/~drg/essay.htm. Stock Recommendation Reports are longer than two full pages each with a one page reference page containing not less than 4 references (3 must be in-print).

Last Extra Credit assignment is to prepare a Retirement Plan for yourself. One copy will be turned in January not later than the last day of classes. No late extra credits will be accepted. Paper will be graded on completeness and thoroughness of your plan. Your paper needs to be written so that someone who knows nothing about retirement Planning will be able to understand everything about retirement needs and what you will do to achieve that goal. They will also need to know what your retirement goal is. The only guide lines are that it is a white paper report (1" margins, double spaced). Title is Retirement Plan on the first line and your name on the second line. Grading and points are will be determined by the instructor.
