COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

COMPUTER / TECHNOLOGY COURSES

KEYBOARDING is a semester course offered to Grades 9-12. Prerequisite(s): None. The emphasis of this class is to develop keyboarding speed and accuracy. Students learn and practice the touch method of alphanumeric keyboarding and learn the basic word processing functions including formatting and editing documents. MS ACCESS / POWERPOINT is a semester course offered to Grades 9-12. Prerequisite(s): None. Students learn database and multimedia presentation applications using Microsoft Access and PowerPoint. Using Access students will store, maintain, and retrieve information to design and generate professionally looking reports. Using the many special features of PowerPoint, students will develop a script, import digitized text, graphics, and audio to produce effective multimedia presentations. 2001-2002 Instructors:

MS WORD/EXCEL is a semester course offered to Grades 9-12. Prerequisite(s): None. Students learn word processing and spreadsheet functions from beginner through advanced using MS Word and MS Excel. The focus of this course is to learn and use the many special features of Word and Excel and showcase their skills by producing professional looking documents. Students also learn to import spreadsheets and graphs with other documents to modify page layouts for maximum effect. 2001-2002 Instructors:

DESKTOP PUBLISHING is a semester course offered to Grades 9-12. Prerequisite(s): None. Students use Aldus PageMaker to develop basic and advanced desktop skills, publish newsletters, create documents with graphics, and construct publications using newspaper features. Students develop advanced editing and layout skills and computer graphics to produce professional quality work. 2001-2002 Instructors:

MANAGEMENT COURSES

INTRODUCTION TO ACCOUNTING is a year course offered to Grades 9-12. Prerequisite(s): None. Students learn basic accounting procedures and concepts using modern accounting practices. Emphasis is placed on analyzing business transactions, managing receivables and payables, preparing adjusting entries, closing entries, and financial statements. COLLEGE ACCOUNTING is a year course offered to Grades 9-12. Prerequisite(s): None. Advanced accounting concepts and principles are presented to the student and applications are completed. Emphasis is given to the analysis and interpretation of financial activity, preparing and interpreting financial statements, and applying accounting theory in decision making. This course helps prepare the student for post-secondary accounting. DUAL CREDIT is possible.2001-2002 Instructors:


BUSINESS LAW is a semester course offered to Grades 11-12. Prerequisite(s): None. Students will learn basic business terminology related to law. Topics covered: crimes, torts, contracts, personal rights and responsibilities, our legal and judicial systems, commercial paper, and insurance. Current events, guest speakers, field trips, court videos and a mock trail are used to offer current information. Legal issues and situations are addressed in the form of case studies and special class projects. 2001-2002 Instructors:

ENTREPRENEURSHIP is a semester course offered to Grades 11-12. Prerequisite(s): None. Students learn basic entrepreneurial concepts and strategies that will be used to plan and develop a startup business. Working in small groups students will take an “idea” and develop it into a viable business plan. The course addresses topics critical in the planning process including general operations, financing, marketing, and human resource issues. Participation and active involvement of community businesspersons will be a regular part of this class. 2001-2002 Instructors: Mr. Kruse.


INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS is a semester course offered to Grades 11-12. Prerequisite(s): Entrepreneurship or Consent of Instructor. The basic concepts of world trade will be covered. The student will explore international business environments and economic factors of foreign trade. Topics will include: transportation, insurance, banking, export marketing, importing, U.S. customs procedures, international organizations, future developments, and careers. 2001-2002 Instructors:

INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS is a semester course offered to Grades 9-12. Prerequisite(s): None. Students develop a basic understanding of the different types of business structures and how they are organized. Basic economic concepts of marketing, finance, work force and production are introduced. Emphasis is on the kinds of decisions that business owners and managers face on an everyday level. BUSINESS FINANCE is a semester course offered to Grades 9-12. Prerequisite(s): None. Students learn basic concepts of raising capital and financial management in different types of business organizations. Topics include interpreting financial reports, stocks and bonds, credit and loans, insurance, and risk management. Issues dealing with personal finance including checking, personal loans and credit cards are also covered. 2001-2002 Instructors:


HUMAN RELATIONS is a semester course offered to Grades 11-12. Prerequisite(s): None. Students learn about human resource issues affecting today’s workplace. Different management styles and programs are explored as well as strategies to develop strong positive interpersonal skills. Topics also include employment trends and legal issues that every worker should know. In addition, students will prepare an effective job seeking campaign including preparing a “winning” resume and developing good interviewing skills. 2001-2002 Instructors:


NOTETAKING is a semester course offered to Grades 9-12. Prerequisite(s): None. The student will learn how to take notes quickly using an easy-to-learn system, which can be used in college classroom or in a business setting. COMPUTER SCIENCE


INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE is a semester course offered to Grades 9-12. Prerequisite(s): Algebra I. Will provide the student with and understanding of DOS (Disk Operating System) and Windows personal computer environments. Students will use the BASIC language and explore the programming language. Pascal and C. Students will contract the personal computer world with the world of large computer system environments and focus on the career field relevant to both environments. COMPUTER SCIENCE-ADVANCED PLACEMENT is a one year course offered to Grades 11-12. Prerequisite(s): Algebra 2 and Consent of Instructor. This course will provide students with a conceptual background in computing and computer science with an emphasis on developing an ability to apply general concepts and sequential processing, algorithm design and testing and documentation. The programming language C++ will also be introduced into the course. This course follows the syllabus recommended by the College Entrance Examination Board to qualify a student of the Advance Placement Examination. 2001-2002 Instructors:
