Vitamin C to the rescue

Vitamin C can help promote timely recovery for patients who have undergone dental surgery. This vitamin assists in the healing process. In fact, vitamin C deficiency can significantly reduce healing. Some doctors prescribe high doses of vitamin C and multivitamin supplements before surgery.

Your diet is also essential for the growth and regeneration of tissues. Patients can delay healing and increase the possibility of infection when they do not get the proper nutrients. These includes adequate amounts of carbohydrates and fat. In addition to vitamin C, vitamins A, E, B, K and D are important to the healing process.

However, high doses of chewable vitamin C may damage your teeth. Vitamin C is very acidic, and anything more than one chewable tablet a day may cause tooth enamel erosion. Those taking high daily doses of vitamin C should use nonchewable forms.
