In this section, the "Assembly area" or middle section of the Memorial, the length of the Arizona may be viewed. There are clearly marked diagrams (the box-like structures shown above in middle of Assembly area) identifying those parts of the sunken ship that are visible above water. The diagrams also shows the position and condition of the ship as she lies under water.
After 50 years, small quantities of oil still leaks from the sunken hulk near the rusting remains of the number 3 gun turret and may be seen bubbling to the surface at regular intervals.
The leaking oil is often called "The Black Tears of the Arizona." Folklore has it that when the last survivor of the Arizona dies, the leaking oil will stop.
