Dinosaurs from Judith River formation

Ankylosaurs were the most armored of all dinosaurs.  Their backs were covered with bony, in some cases pointed,   plates (scutes),  Some species had bony tails.  All had simple, rather poor teeth in contrast to the efficient teeth of hadrosaurs.  Some scientists have speculated that ankylosaurs could only eat tender vegetation.

Edmontonia

Edmontonia is probably the most common armored dinosaur found in the Judith River formation.  It was large and well protected but jad small teeth.  By far the most commonly found fossils of anylosaurs are the scutes.

Scute is pointed at bottom.  Right hand edge is missing.  Note the surface at top where it attached to the hide.  The scute is not symetrical; it would not have projected directly away from the hide, but at an angle.  While this is obviously an ankylosaur scute, I'm less sure of the identification of Edmontonia.
Formation: Oldman
Epoch: Campanian of the late Cretaceous
Length: 20 feet
Weight: 2 tons
