Preterite

Ayer mi compañera de cuarto habló con su hermano, Hector, y él decidió visitarnos la semana que viene. El año pasado cuando llegó aquí para su visita anual, fue un desastre. Preparamos una comida deliciosa, pero Hector no comió nada. El día siguiente fuimos a un restaurante y él bebió cinco cervezas y no pagó nada. Aquella noche miró la televisión y el día siguiente no hizo nada tampoco.

The preterite endings for -ar verbs:	The preterite endings for -er verbs:	The preterite endings for -ir verbs:

Note that the -er and -ir verbs have the same exact endings in the preterite. It is very important to pay attention to the accent marks for the first and third person singular forms. Hablo without the accent means "I speak", but with the accent Habló means "He/she/you spoke".

Irregular preterite verbs

There are many irregular preterite verbs, but you will just need to learn the three most common ones this semester.

hacer	ser/ir	tener
hice hiciste hizo hicimos hicisteis hicieron	fui fuiste fue fuimos fuisteis fueron	tuve tuviste tuvo tuvimos tuvisteis tuvieron

Note that there are no accents on the irregular preterite forms.

Indirect Object Pronouns

Voy a mandarle una carta a Juan para decirle que mi madre me compró un coche.

me te le (to me, for me) (to you, for you) (to him, to her, to you) (for him, for her, for you) nos os les (to us, for us) (to you, for you) plural (to you, to them) (for you, for them)

The indirect object pronouns answer the question "to whom" or "for whom". Placement rules are the same as for direct object pronouns:

Directly Before The Conjugated Verb: Attached To The Infinitive:

La azafata les sirve vino. El piloto va a darles m·s informaciÛn.

dar, decir

Estudiante: Me das una "A" este semestre, øverdad?
Profesor: Siempre les doy "A" a los mejores estudiantes. T™ tienes notas muy altas. Por eso voy a darte una "A".

dar - to give decir - to say; to tell doy das da damos dais dan digo dices dice decimos decís dicen

Gustar

A Marta le gustan las enchiladas de mole pero no le gusta el guacamole.

Keep in mind that gustar means "to be pleasing". The word order for sentences with gustar and similar verbs can be remembered by the following formula:

indirect object pronoun + gustar + subject me te le nos os les + gusta gusta gustan + el cafÈ (singular) viajar (infinitive) los tacos (plural)

He likes those cookies.

Juan and Pepe like fried fish.

He likes those cookies.

Juan and Pepe like fried fish.
