GRADES 3,4,5

Oak Creek 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will have the exciting opportunity to learn about a new language and culture this year.  They will be immersed in the Spanish language with little or no English spoken for two 30 minute lessons each week!

What do they need to be successful in class?

All they need is a willingness to learn, to explore something new and to have fun.  They will be asked to listen, repeat, sing, dance, play learning games, draw, and follow simple directions.

The two short 30 minute lessons each week of learning time can be extended by trying some of the on-line games and practices that will be available on these web pages on the "Quarter Themes" link.

The goal of the program is to have the students learn Spanish through the existing curriculum by enhancing and enriching the Social Studies program.  We will of course start out with basic Spanish phrases, then move on to use the new Spanish vocabulary in a Social Studies context.

Quarter 1 we will be reviewing greetings, colors, numbers... and
learn the days and months in Spanish.
We will also practice the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish.

Quarter 2 we will learn about good health, which involves good nutrition and exercise.  We will find out about the Food Pyramid in Spanish and discover some typical Spanish meals.

We will also learn about the Body, "el cuerpo", and Exercise. We will find out more about Soccer, "el fútbol", their most popular sport!

Quarter 3 we will find out about the weather  and clothing of Central and South America and  contrast these with our own area.

Quarter 4 we will emphasize "Map Skills" (Direcciones, Geografía,
los Países y Capitales)
contrasting a typical Latin American town with  Oak  Creek. We will review the continents and the Spanish speaking countries of the world.

Of course all along the way, Hispanic culture and celebrations will be woven into the classroom experience.

By the end of the year the student will be able to:
  • understand the widespread influence of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures
  • greet people and introduce himself/herself and say good-bye
  • ask how someone is feeling and tell how he/she is feeling
  • ask where someone is from and tell where he/she is from
  • ask what someone is like and tell what he/she is like
  • use the Spanish alphabet to spell
  • use numbers to count, tell his/her age, and say their birth date
  • identify the colors in Spanish
  • identify the days and months of the year in Spanish
  • ask questions and respond to requests in the classroom
  • follow simple directions
  • talk about healthy foods and parts of the body
  • ask what someone likes to eat and drink and tell what he/she likes to eat and drink
  • talk about their town and state in Spanish
  • locate some Spanish countries
  • do a Latin American dance and sing some Spanish songs
