THE BRIDGE WIZARD

By Willie Zurfluh

TERENCE REESE

Terence Reese was one of the true legends of Bridge. At one time considered the best player in the world, his wins included four European championships and the World Championship in 1955.

Reese was also a great writer. I belong to the generation of Bridge players who learned the game from Reese's books. Several of his books, including Reese on Play, Master Play and Play Bridge with Reese, have become classics. His books were not only well written and instructive, they showed a great wit. The introduction to Master Play reads: "To my mother, who taught me Bridge and other things that I learned less well."

My favorite Reese hand is one that helped him win the Bermuda Bowl in 1955.

6ª is a good contract but most declares would fail to make it. They would try to cash three hearts and when one them gets ruffed the find them self short a trick and take the losing diamond finesse. Unlucky.

Not so with Terence Resse. He won the space in dummy and lead a low club.

When East went up with the Ace, he threw the ©A!!!

He won the diamond return, cashed the ©King and ©Queen and drew trumps ending in the dummy. He now had 12 tricks: 6 spades, 5 hearts and 1 diamond. Brilliant coup!
