The Adventures of Sydney Cardless
by Willie Zurfluh
The 24 IMP Swing
Autumn was in the air and it was time, once again, for the YAR-BRO Club's annual Swiss Team Club Championship. Sydney entered with the Wiley Oriental and Dr. and Mrs. Irving J. Sheepmeat. This event usually drew the best players in East Kumquat and this year was no exception. The first round Sydney drew the defending Club Champions: Big Jim, the Batman and the Katzenjammer Kids.
The first two boards were pushes and then Big Jim's team picked up a 12 IMP swing. The next board was a push and then Sydney lost another swing, this time 11 IMPs. That gave Big Jim's team a 23 IMP lead with one board to go. This looked like an insurmountable lead, but when Sydney Cardless sits down at the table, anything is possible.
On the last board Big Jim opened 1NT and Sydney bid 2§ . The Batman turned to Sydney and said, "That's nothing fancy, right, just Clubs?". At this moment the Both Vulnerable - Dealer East Wiley Oriental said, "Oh no! That's ASTRO.
He has Hearts and a lower ranking suit." Sydney had forgotten ASTRO. But, Sydney figured he could bid Clubs again and again and his partner would catch on. At this moment Sydney's life passed before him when the Batman bid 6NT and the Wiley Oriental went into a huddle. Sydney just prayed his partner wouldn't
bid 7© . After all, he couldn't very well bid But, finally, the Wiley Oriental emerged from his huddle with a double. This wasn't so bad, Sydney thought. He could just cash and it wouldn't be a disaster.
But, then Sydney thought to himself, the double calls for a Heart lead, part of the ASTRO convention. So Sydney led the © 9 and the Wiley Oriental won his Ace. Sydney's lead showed zero or two higher cards, and, shrewd devil that he was, the Wiley Oriental worked it out.

He shifted to the § 10 and when the dust had settled Big Jim was down 7 for minus 2000. But, disaster loomed just over the horizon ... Meanwhile ... Uthuh Woom ...
Larry Jammer had not forgotten he was playing ASTRO and bid 3§ over Dr. Sheepmeat's 1NT opening. Mrs. Sheepmeat, also, bid 6NT which Dick Katzen doubled. But, now, Dr. Sheepmeat re-doubled. He could go for 4000!
But, Larry Jammer didn't know what to lead. Finally, he decided on a Diamond and Dr. Sheepmeat took 8 Spade tricks and 5 Diamiond tricks, making seven re-doubled for plus 2110! Sydney's team had a swing of plus 4110 for 24 IMPs. Once again, Sydney had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
