o Phil Moughmer asked what the alpha channel is in graphics, is having trouble using it.
o Dennis Drewek described freei.com, an ISP.
o Gary Köhler described IDG's bullying tactics over their trademarking of the formula "xxx for Dummies", and wondered whether they could have really trademarked every conceivable homonym of "for" (fore, four, 4, plus perfectly possible spellings allowed by English such as phore, gheaurrhe, etc.).
The meeting was adjourned at 8:34 pm.

Three programs were demonstrated:
  • Speed Razor (a video editing program),
  • Aura, a video paint/animation/compositing program, described as "the Swiss Army Knife" of paint programs, and
  • LightWave VT (not taped, unfortunately).

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm.

Presentation

Off to one side, Gary Köhler worked on Scott Brunkow's machine, Sybil, where SuSE Linux 6.3 has recently been installed. Gary was able to get X-Window to start in KDE for Scott's user as well as for Root.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:44 pm.

January 17, 2000

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:13 pm. Attendance: 6.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the December meeting.

Discussion

o Dale Roethig noted with relief that we all survived The Big Rollover. This led to a discussion of Roman numerals (what a relief it will be to see copyright dates of MM instead of MCMLXXXVIII!) and numerals in general.
o Scott Brunkow and Gary Köhler shared a story they heard of an unfortunate corporation that did not prepare for Y2K and probably will not survive The Big Rollover.
o There was a discussion of The Cuckoo's Egg by Clifford Stoll.

Presentation

Gary Köhler demonstrated BeOS installed on Kundry, his notebook computer. (Don't try this at home!) One unfortunate side-effect, which he showed before the meeting is that Linux no longer boots because its partition has been bumped up one position. Gary hopes to have this fixed by the next meeting.
John Schwarzmeier brought his new Sony Mavica camera, this one with a resolution of 1024x768. Gary then demonstrated BeOS's JPEG viewer to look at some of the pictures taken on John's camera.
The meeting was adjourned at about 8:30 pm.
