Minutes of Meetings
Second Half of 2000

December 18, 2000

Secretary Gary Köhler called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm. Attendance: 4, 5 later on.
The reading of the minutes of the November meeting was deferred.

Discussion

o Gary Köhler described the four issues that could make him a "refugee from OS/2". The issues are:
  • Lack of support for 1152 x 864 resolution,
  • Bugs in the S3 true-color drivers that are still not fixed,
  • Execrable support for PCMCIA, and
  • Infrared support that is not much better.
o John Schwarzmeier updated us concerning his recent computer problems.

The meeting was adjourned early.

November 20, 2000

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:13 pm. Attendance: 6, 5 later on.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the October meeting.

Discussion

o Dale Roethig gave his impressions of the recent FilmCon convention in Madison. Highlights included classes on storyboarding and character design, and Iain McCaig's speech.

Demonstration

Gary Köhler showed how his laptop, Kundry, finally has sound under OS/2.

Dale Roethig then showed demos (both on CD-ROM and videotape) of 3D Studio Max Release 3 from Kinetics (a division of Autodesk). The visual effects achieved with this program are nothing short of astonishing.

The meeting was adjourned at about 9:00 pm.

October 16, 2000

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm. Attendance: 6, 7 later on. He announced that the Matrox RT2000 would be demonstrated at the next meeting.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the September meeting.

Discussion

o Dale Roethig spoke about cable versus DSL for high-speed Internet access.

Demonstration

We started by viewing Bounce-Back Videos's tape of the Amiga 2K banquet. We found it impossible to watch for a number of reasons: the camera seemed to be located just outside the kitchen, thus affording no good view of the speakers and resulting in a murky sound dominated by clinking silverware. We could only stand a few minutes of this.

We then viewed a bit of the Light Wave 6 Guided Tour video (much more professional).

Discussion

o Discussion resumed when Gary Köhler shared a recent ZDNet article concerning the necessity of reverse-engineering, with the :CueCat cited as an example.
o Dennis Drewek wondered why the MGI VideoWave editing program causes the available resources to drop from 70% to 90% just on loading.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:43 pm.

September 18, 2000

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:01 pm. Attendance: 6, 7 later on. He announced that the demo tapes would be deferred to the next meeting.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the August meeting. With sadness he read the obituary of member Randy Rusch, who had died September 15. He was remembered for his activity in the Amiga SIGs and for editing the Amiga pages of The Monitor Newsletter before his health declined.

Discussion

o There was discussion of an electronic newsletter, as The Monitor Newsletter is now one of our biggest expenses.
o Gary Köhler showed an ad for a PC that looks a lot like the Amiga 500/1200. The ad carries the slogan "Someday PCs will look this".
o Dale Roethig made remarks about three recent favorite games, Diablo II, Shogun, and Combat Mission.
o There was lengthy discussion of the newsletter and postcard reminders of meetings. Dale broke the logjam with a schedule for the rest of the year. October and December will be print and e-mail, November and January will be e-mail only and postcard reminders of the upcoming meeting.

Demonstration

Dale demonstrated DC10 and Studio DV from Pinnacle. These are two programs that come with video capture boards from Pinnacle. The program allows drag and drop editing of a video including transition effects, added sounds and more.

Dale also demonstrated Hollywood FX, a configurable 3D special effects program from Pinnacle.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:58 pm.

August 21, 2000

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm. Attendance: 7, 8 later on. He announced that the demo tapes would be deferred to the next meeting.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the July meeting.
Treasurer Phil Moughmer reported on the state of our finances. At the moment they are good, but we were shut out of GenCon this year and our membership dues do not cover the newsletter and hall rental. We are currently living off of a balance of $2,013.50, but somewhere down the road we are going to have to recruit more members and economize.

Discussion

o Don Bedroske reported good results with FreeNet as his ISP.
o There was discussion of an electronic newsletter, as The Monitor Newsletter is now one of our biggest expenses.

Demonstration

There was a demonstration contrasting Japanese Anime on DVD and the video version of it side-by-side.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm.

Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the June meeting.

Discussion

o Dale Roethig negotiated with Scott Brunkow to bring in a DVD player and movie for comparison at the next meeting.
o There was discussion about the relative quality of human vision, film, video, and MPEG video, with emphasis on the conversion from film to video.
o Dale Roethig demonstrated his new laptop and its optical mouse. Then he demonstrated an MPEG video on the machine.
o There was a discussion of CD versus DVD formats.
o Gary Köhler described a problem with his dad's laptop and the need to use RegEdit to see what is being started at startup.
o Paul Jurkowski mentioned a utility that shows all currently running programs.
o Don Bedroske had questions about digitizing old vinyl records to CD (ultimately). Dale made several suggestions.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm.
