Minutes of Meetings
First Half of 2001

June 18, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:03 pm. Attendance: 6, 7 later on.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the May meeting.

Discussion

o Phil Moughmer described working with a program called DVD-It and the problems involved in converting from one multimedia video format to another.
o Dale showed us his new Epson 610 scanner. One use that he is putting it to is scanning the pens in his collection for sale on the web. Some time ago (February 2000 meeting) Dale tried a digital camera for this purpose, but he had problems, so he decided to try scanning instead.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm.

May 21, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm. Attendance: 6, 7 later on.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the April meeting.

Discussion

o Dale has a new video card with TV-Out capability which he demonstrated by showing an AVI file (video shot by Phil Moughmer) on both a Commodore 1902 monitor (full screen) and on his laptop (in a window). There was no sound at this point.
o Phil Moughmer described how easy it was in Adobe Premiere 6.0 to take the original English-language version of this video and edit in narration in Spanish.
o We then got the sound working on Dale's laptop and were able to hear the narration. Then for laughs we ran both the AVI and QuickTime versions of the video side-by-side on the laptop screen in their respective viewers. Amazingly, sound from both players were output simultaneously, something we did not expect. The two players were about 5 seconds out of sync with each other.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm.

April 16, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:03 pm. Attendance: 7, 6 later on.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the March meeting.

Discussion

o Dale showed a few modules of AIST's MoviePack program.
o Dale demonstrated Adobe Premiere 6.0, a video editing program. This time he used a dual display consisting of his laptop's screen plus an additional monitor. For many of us this was the first time we had seen Windows 98's dual monitor capabilities.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:49 pm.

March 19, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm. Attendance: 6, 5 later on.

Discussion

o Gary Köhler demonstrated some of the astronomy programs from the book by Montenbruck and Pfleger. In the course of the demonstration, Gary showed that two small partial solar eclipses will be visible here six months apart, on December 14, 2001 and June 10, 2002.
o Phil Moughmer demonstrated Adobe Premiere 6.0, a video editing program. This is a program that generally retails for $600 if sold separately, but it is usually included with a video card/capture board. Among some of the new features of the program, an important one is that Premiere now includes Bars and Tones, which is vital for calibrating color and sound of the edited video.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:44 pm.

February 19, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm. Attendance: 7, 6 later on. He started with a demo of an MPEG-4 player program on his laptop computer.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the January meeting.

Discussion

o Dale showed the WinAmp MP3 player program.
o There was a discussion of the recent "Moon Hoax" program on the Fox network.
o Dale attempted to demonstrate a program called SeriousSam, but had no luck.
o Dennis Drewek spoke about Leo Laporte and the ScreenSaver program on TechTV.
o Dale answered questions about his optical mouse, which led into a discussion of USB peripherals.
o There was a discussion of HDTV.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:46 pm.

January 15, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm. Attendance: 6, 5 later on.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the December meeting.

Discussion

o The main focus of attention was on Gary Köhler's efforts to resurrect Windows 92 on an old Toshiba Contura laptop. (25 megahertz of raw 486 power!) Many false starts were made until it was discovered that the directory containing Norton Desktop for Windows, an alternative to the Program Manager shell program had been deleted. All four of the crucial DOS/Windows configuration files had to be edited before Windows 92 would start again.
o The distribution of miscellaneous games and software packages, originally scheduled for the December meeting, was held.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:46 pm.
