Second Half of 2001



December 17, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:06 pm. Attendance: 7, 6 later on. We had too much fun viewing the Christmas CD-ROM prepared by Dale Roethig, Kevin Rice, and Dennis Drewek to have a formal meeting!

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm.

November 19, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Attendance: 4, 6 later on. He described his recent attendance at FilmCon in Madison and showed some of Pat Beck's demos. Some Windows Media Player fun ensued.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the October meeting.

Discussion

 o Dale demonstrated some of the Urban Terror mods to Quake III.
 o Dennis Drewek related recent Windows XP woes. The scanner does not work, and the manufacturer will not write a driver for it.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:01 pm.

October 15, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm. Attendance: 6, 4 later on.

Discussion

 o We viewed miscellaneous satellite pictures of Lower Manhattan taken both before and after the Attack.
 o There was a comparison of miscellaneous videos on Dale's computer.
 o We viewed a video from Tom's Hardware showing the effects of removing the cooling systems from different CPUs. An important difference is that the Intel chips slow down and stop without overheating, while the AMD chips all but go up in flames.
 o Secretary Gary Köhler finally got to read the minutes of the September meeting.

Demonstration

Dale demonstrated the Diablo II Expansion Set, "Lord of Destruction".

The meeting was adjourned at 9:13 pm.

September 17, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm. Attendance: 5, 7 later on.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the August meeting.

Discussion

 o There was discussion of the previous week's terrorist attacks.
 o (Update) Dale's computer has been disinfected at last. It seems that the virus was masquerading as a legitimate Windows file.
 o Gary described the recent Offensive trojan program which has the potential to be very nasty, as it disables almost everything it can in the Windows Registry in order to cripple the system and hamper recovery efforts.
 o There was a discussion of Milwaukee PC and an article about it in the business section of the day's Journal/Sentinel.
 o Dale described a server case that Safe Harbor has for sale.

Demonstration

Dale demonstrated some of the features of the Gettysburg DVD and compared it with a DVD of Tora Tora Tora. Playback was via the program PCFriendly.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:48 pm.

August 20, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm. Attendance: 5, 4 later on.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the July meeting.

Discussion

 o Dale's laptop had a virus, which we attempted to disinfect. The anti-virus program was not able to run to completion during the meeting as about one in three files seemed to be infected.
 o Gary brought a copy of the latest issue of 2600 Magazine.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:48 pm.

July 16, 2001

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm. Attendance: 4, 5 later on.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the June meeting.

Discussion

 o We viewed pictures of the recent South Shore Frolics parade (and others) taken by John Schwarzmeier with his Sony Mavica camera. All marveled at the excellent quality of the pictures for a digital camera.
 o Discussion veered of into astronomy with a heavy emphasis on celestial mechanics. Several other non-computing topics came up.
 o Lastly we discussed GenCon.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:56 pm.
