Second Half of 2005

December 19, 2005

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the November meeting. Attendance 5, 6 later on.

Discussion

 o We started off by testing several ethernet cables with John Schwarzmeier's LinkMaster cable tester.
 o Dale Roethig showed us an article on constructing a 2.4 GHz wireless antenna using--a Pringles can!
 o Dennis Drewek and Dale Roethig shared recent experiences with nasty viruses and rootkits.
 o Dennis Drewek related problems he had with Milwaukee PC.
 o Dennis Drewek then expressed disapproval of CRTs and other items.
 o Scott Brunkow asked Dale Roethig if he had gotten Doom 3 to run yet.
 o Randy Jaeckel had a question about power and brought in a problem system.
 o Scott Brunkow had a question about floppies written at the Milwaukee Public Library.

The meeting adjourned at 8:23 pm. Some of us stayed a while longer and examined Randy Jaeckel's computer. A power failure left it unable to boot. We were unable to do anything significant before we had to leave for the evening.

November 21, 2005

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm. He discussed this month's CD-ROM.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the October meeting.

Discussion

 o Gary Köhler shared an article by Bruce Schneier on the Sony rootkit.
 o Dale Roethig mentioned an interview of a former Intel CEO in which he compared Apple to Yahoo.
 o Dale Roethig reported that we had netted $103 at Rock Con.
 o Dale Roethig reported that he had gotten copies of the latest version of Brothers in Arms called Earned in Blood.
 o Dale Roethig gave further details about the club CD-ROM.
 o There was a discussion of browsers.
 o Dale Roethig then demonstrated Brothers in Arms -- Earned in Blood.
 o Discussion turned to the mutiny on HMS Bounty and the aftermath.
 o Dale Roethig had a few comments about Open Office 1.4.
 o Dennis Drewek told of how he got down to a mere 15 processes running on his XP machine.
 o Scott Brunkow mentioned an article on Parrot, a PERL 6 emulator.
 o John Schwarzmeier reported problems with his internet setup.

The meeting adjourned at 8:52 pm.

October 17, 2005

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:18 pm. There was an initial discussion of disk burning: CD-RW vs. CD-R, DVD formats.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the September meeting.

Discussion

 o Dale Roethig updated us about his problems at last month's meeting. He was using the wrong codec.
 o There was a discussion of language and dialects of American English and German.
 o Treasurer Phil Moughmer reported a balance of $335.92. Dale noted that some income is expected shortly from RockCon. Dale also suggested raising the dues.
 o Dale Roethig led a discussion of the Lexmark cartridge refilling controversy.
 o Gary Köhler spoke about the decline of user groups.
 o Then there was a discussion of the different generations of computer.
 o Dennis Drewek spoke about downloading, BitTorrent, and broadband speeds.
 o Gary Köhler had a question about jail phones.
 o Kevin Cook started a discussion of mushrooms--the edible kind!
 o We finished up with a discussion of storage devices then (1960's) and now.

The meeting adjourned at 8:44 pm.

September 19, 2005

Secretary Gary Köhler called the meeting to order at 7:18 pm. Attendance: 5, 6 later on. President Dale Roethig showed up later and presided over the rest of the meeting.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the August meeting.

Discussion

 o There was a general discussion of electric appliances.
 o Dale shared with us the "joys" of Windows Multimedia.
 o Eventually a reader was found and we viewed some videos using the Movie B program.

The meeting adjourned at 8:56 pm.

August 15, 2005

Secretary Gary Köhler called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Attendance: 7.

The meeting centered about activity at Phil Moughmer's and John Scwharzmeier's laptop computers, while Gary Köhler conversed with a visitor on many topics.

The meeting adjourned at 8:56 pm.

July 18, 2005

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:20 pm. Attendance: 5, 6 later on.

Discussion

 o Discussion centered first on the cancellation of GameFest and its consequences. Treasurer Phil Moughmer reported our balance at $315.92 and estimated that we need $550 a year to keep going.
 o RockCon was mentioned as a potential venue for raising funds.
 o Discussion turned to new video cards.

The meeting adjourned at 9:10 pm.
