Minutes of Meetings
First Half of 2007

June 18, 2007

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:23 pm. Attendance 6, 4 later on.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the May meeting.

Discussion

 o Discussion started with the various generations of video cards popular at various times.
 o Dennis Drewek has been elevated to Member-at-Large by acclamation.
 o Dale Roethig had miscellaneous comments on the stories in the June 2007 issue of The Monitor Newsletter.
 o Dale Roethig reported on the Game SIG. He upgraded First Eagle with its first patch, distributed several more airplanes to fly.
 o Gary Köhler spoke about hardware detection (such as one might have to perform when booting an operating system). Because of the many kludges added over the years it is necessary to test for the least capability first in CPUs, video, and most hardware. A noteworthy exception is the test for memory, where the most advanced method should be tried first and then each of the others in turn in the event of failure.
 o We wound up working on the various computers that were set up.

May 21, 2007

Secretary Gary Köhler called the meeting to order at 7:16 pm. Attendance 5, 6 later on.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the April meeting.
Treasurer Phil Moughmer reported the club's balance at $360.00.

Discussion

 o Gary Köhler asked John Schwarzmeier about future "cons" (conventions). John said definitely RockCon in November and possibly OshCon in September.
 o Discussion turned to spam and fake pills.
 o Dale Roethig arrived.
 o Dennis Drewek brought copies of the PC-Linux OS live CD-ROM for everybody. It was tried on various machines present.

April 16, 2007

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:12 pm. Attendance 6.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the March meeting.

Discussion

 o Dennis Drewek clarified the upgrades to Vista. He also related recent problems with an LCD TV. Discussion also turned to tuners for HDTV.
 o Gary Köhler had a question about the behavior of his dad's Lexmark inkjet printer.
 o Dale Roethig showed several new programs.
 o Gary Köhler had a few questions about making custom audio CDs.
 o Dale Roethig had more goodies.
 o Gary Köhler asked about spam, if anyone has been noticing less of it lately.
 o Discussion turned (inevitably) to the shooting spree that had occurred that day at Virginia Tech.
 o Finally the topic of the notorious counterfeiter Mr. 880 turned up.

March 19, 2007

Secretary Gary Köhler called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm. Attendance 6.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the February meeting.

Elections

Elections were held. All officers retained their offices by acclamation.

Discussion

 o The meeting kicked off with a discussion of counterfeiting through the ages.
 o Dennis Drewek had more on the upcoming digital TV conversion.
 o Dennis Drewek warned all about upgrading to Vista--that one must upgrade from like to like, such as Pro to Pro.
 o Phil Moughmer showed off his new phone.
 o Lastly there was a discussion of the joys of Daylight Saving Time, of which appliances made the transition on time and which ones didn't.

February 19, 2007

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm. Attendance 6.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the January meeting.

Discussion

 o Dennis Drewek showed off his "DTV Deputy" certificate, which led to discussion of the upcoming shift to digital TV.
 o Gary Köhler summarized some recent news about hobbyist operating systems -- and noted that none of them seem to print, not even to a line printer!
 o Dale Roethig spoke about BitComet, a BitTorrent type program.
 o Several Mythbusters episodes were discussed, such as how to shatter glass with your voice and the infamous "brown note" urban myth. "Weird" rocketry was discussed as well.
 o Dale Roethig reported difficulties in getting on line between 10 pm and 2 am.
 o This led to discussion of broadband.
 o Dennis Drewek talked about thumb drives.
 o Gary Köhler's "End of the OS?" opinion-piece was discussed.
 o Dennis Drewek noted a few shortcomings of Office 2007's interface.

January 15, 2007

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:13 pm. Attendance 6.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the December meeting.

Discussion

 o Earlier Kevin Cook brought in a strange 60 inch USB cable with the same gender at both ends. John Schwarzmeier and Dale Roethig connected their computers with it, but neither could recognize the other.
 o Dale Roethig showed a PCMCIA card with two high-speed USB ports on it. However, one of the ports has to be plugged into an onboard USB port for the power. In effect it replaces one slow port with a fast one.
 o The execution of Saddam Hussein was discussed, and somehow the death of Mary Queen of Scots crept in.
 o Dale Roethig showed a D-Link 802g WiFi antenna.
 o Discussion turned to hard-drives, new and old, and then to DVD's.
 o Dale Roethig spoke about Cyberhawk, a new anti-spyware program that works by monitoring the behavior of running programs.
