Minutes of Meetings
First Half of 1999

June 21, 1999

The meeting was called to order by no one in particular at 7:06 pm. Attendance: 6.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the May meeting.
Treasurer Phil Moughmer reported a balance of $1146.55.

SIG Reports

o Game SIG: Dale could not make it, so Gary read the following report sent via e-mail.

Last Game SIG we got a chance to try out MechWarrior 3. It has just gorgeous 3D and runs well on my K6-2 with the Monster card. Hopefully, we can try out the uplink cable that Brian made for the club hub with Craig's 100base hub.
The Game SIG will meet every Saturday in July. People should contact Dale for their computers, time and availability for GenCon. We will set up on Wednesday afternoon, as last year. They should try to make at least one meeting in July for software installation and network compatibility testing.

Discussion

o Gary Köhler described the BeOS operating system.
o Phil Maughmer asked why Linux was gaining momentum.
o Gary Köhler did not bring his system in for a Web SIG presentation, but offered instead an article from Windows magazine which reiterates much of what he has said previously about navigation, frames, and other topics.

There was no presentation. The meeting was adjourned at about 8:35 pm.

May 17, 1999

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:19 pm. Attendance: 6.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the April meeting.

SIG Reports

o Game SIG: Took two hours to get all systems on the same protocols. Eight out of ten machines were attached to the hub. Ran Starcraft and ran it smoothly, this will be a contender at GenCon. Fixed Quagmeier's network setup.

Discussion

o Dale's flyer detailing MACE overstock items for sale was distributed.

In lieu of a presentation, an attempt was made to fix outstanding hardware/software problems on John Schwarzmeier's machine, Quagmeier. An attempt was made to clean up the registry. One unique problem is that Quagmeier has three (3!) hard-drives inside, of which only two are recognized by the system, and only one of which is recognized as being formatted and thus usable. We were unable to resolve this. Gary Köhler suggested checking the drive jumpers and the cables. The hardware problems were not resolved.

April 19, 1999

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:12 pm. Attendance: 7, 8 later on.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the March meeting.
Treasurer Phil Moughmer reported a balance of $1187.57.

SIG Reports

o Game SIG: The new hub has been assembled, tried to get John Schwarzmeier's PC Quagmeier onto the system, couldn't get it to work. Craig brought in X-Wing Alliance, said to be the last in the X-Wing series. Tried to get European Air War working, without success.

Discussion

o Dale's flyer detailing MACE overstock items for sale was distributed.
 o There was a discussion of Word's auto-correction "feature".
o Gary Köhler self-indulged with several excerpts from Carleton Egremont III's book, Mr. Bunny's Guide to ActiveX and promised to write a review for the Monitor.
o MACE was mentioned in the April 1999 issue of Amazing Amiga, on page 29.
o There was a discussion of the next Amiga show.
 o There was a discussion of macro-viruses.
o Gary Köhler brought up the subject of "no-name" manufacturer's in connection with his new monitor and an earlier multi-function I/O card. It's hard to heap praise when you don't know where to pile it!

There was no presentation. The meeting was adjourned at about 8:45 pm.

March 15, 1999

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm. Attendance: 10.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the February meeting.

SIG Reports

o Game SIG: Played a game called Falcon IV. Kevin Rice brought in a game called Thief.

Discussion

o Dennis Drewek announced that RAM and ROM would be appearing live at the Milwaukee PC store on Highway 100.
o Dale Roethig described the Gateway Amiga Show. Sold a lot of junk. There were announcements of OS 3.5, 3.6 and 4.0.
o Two guests described their computing interests.

Presentation

Gary Köhler resumed his presentation of web design with a discussion of frames. To illustrate, he showed an alternate version of the MACE web site set up to use frames.

The meeting was adjourned at about 9 pm.

February 15, 1999

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:18 pm. Attendance: 9.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the January meeting.

SIG Reports

o Game SIG: Dale Roethig finally got the Monster video card to work, but it appears that the network card is gone. Received a call from GenCon. We might need to invest in a network hub for use then.

Elections

Elections were held, and the officers for 1999-2000 are as follows:

 o President -- Dale Roethig.

 o Vice-President -- Brion Morisette.

 o 1st Assistant Vice-President -- Kevin Cook.

 o 2nd Assistant Vice-President -- John Schwarzmeier.

Presentation

Dale Roethig brought his laptop and demonstrated the ease with which pictures from his Sony Mavica digital camera could be transferred to the computer and displayed.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:47 pm.

January 18, 1999

President Dale Roethig called the meeting to order at 7:09 pm. Attendance: 7.
Secretary Gary Köhler read the minutes of the December meeting.

SIG Reports

o Game SIG: Dale Roethig installed Photo Studio and experimented with his new digital camera.

Discussion

o Gary Köhler declined to bring his PC to the meeting, citing various hazards created by our Wisconsin winter weather. In partial compensation he handed out hard-copies of the Web presentations for review.

o Gary then spoke about linking and running binaries cross-platform.

o There was a discussion of Partition Magic from PowerQuest.

o There was a discussion about drives, SCSI in particular.

o Discussion then turned to monopolies past and present, with emphasis on the Micro$oft trial.

Presentation

Dale Roethig brought in his Sony Mavica digital camera. Unlike other digital cameras, the Mavica saves images directly to an ordinary high-density floppy disk in JPEG format. No fooling around with temperamental printer ports, special cables and proprietary software. The only problem that we could see with it is the necessity to stay still while the image is saved to disk. Dale took several pictures to demonstrate the quality of the pictures.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm.
