Obedience Trial
Obedience will start early. Come watch our well-trained Beardies. Obedience will
be judged indoors in the ballroom.
Obedience Judge - Elmer Willems
In 1969, Elmer's nine-year-old daughter wanted to join the 4-H dog project with the families'
mixed breed. She was told that the County did not have a dog project leader, and if no one
volunteered there would be no project. Elmer, being a good parent, volunteered, although he knew
nothing about the dog project or dog training. For the next eighteen years, Elmer and his wife were the
joint leaders of the dog project. Along the way, he became involved as a member of the State 4-H
Dog Project Committee and became approved by the state to judge all 4-H Obedience and Junior Showmanship.
As his daughter advanced, the family purchased its first purebred dog, a Shetland Sheepdog, for her.
When Elmer's daughter graduated from 4-H, he decided to try his hand in the obedience ring.
He showed his first Sheltie to a Utility title. Several people, 4-H judges and AKC judges, hounded
him to apply for AKC judging privileges. He was approved as a Novice AKC judge in 1988. Since
then, he has judged over one hundred obedience shows, and sees no end in the near future. Along the
way, Elmer has put obedience titles on a Bearded Collie and four Shelties. He is currently showing
two Australian shepherds-one in Open obedience and one in conformation. "Hope to see you in either
the obedience or breed ring."
Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes
Sweepstakes are open to all Beardies meeting the appropriate age classifications.
Puppies entered in Puppy Sweepstakes must also be entered in a regular class, but Veterans do not.
Champions of records will be allowed. Spayed and neutered Beardies are eligible to compete in
Veterans classes. Sweepstakes money will be paid in the ring to the person showing the
dog.
Sweepstakes Judge - Virginia (Penny) Hanigan

BCCA Symposium
We will present a slide show, "Beardies of the Past," featuring Beardies from
North America that have made important contributions to the breed. To make this seminar possible,
we need help locating photos, stories and other memories about these old dogs that somehow made an impact
on the breed in North America, including dogs from the UK. Other information on the history of the breed
and how it got started in the US will be much appreciated also. We will, among other things, present
a slide show of these great dogs. If you have pictures or stories that you would like to contribute,
please contact someone on the Seminar committee:
