NT1-THE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT

LEXICAL HOMEWORK STUDIIES

As part of learning to use different Greek dictionaries, encyclopedias and lexica, NT1 Greek students are required to complete the following five lexical assignments and to turn them in on the assigned dates.. These will be graded and included in the computation of the homework section of the course grade.

Lexica are in the Library's Reference Room. Use the assigned lexicon for the given exercise and look up the designated word and any specific meanings requested. Please use this exercise to become more proficient in lookng up Greek words, but also to become more familiar with what is found in these various Greek references tools. Hopefully this will help you with exegesis and sermon preparation in the future. Happy Hunting!

 

Lexical Exercise #1 [Due 9/21]

Use Arndt and Gingrich's A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature and give the meanings for the following Greek words in the specific indicated passages:

Required: A,C,E Optional: B,D,F

A) the preposition ei)j for Mk 7:31.

B) the adjective a(/gioj for Ephesians 2:19

C) the adjective pisto/j for I Timothy 1:12

D) the noun a)delfo/j for Luke 21:16

E) the noun lo/goj for John 1:1

F) the noun eu)agge/lion Mark 1:15

 

Lexical Exercise #2 [Due 10/8]

Use the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (10 volumes) and give the following:

Required: B,D,F Optional: A,C,E

A) Look up the word a)lh/qeia and give the first two uses of this word (1, and 2) in the section on "The Early Christian Use of a)lh/qeia".

B) Look up the word file/w and find out in the 'Use in the New Testament' if this word is used for the love of God in the New Testament.

C) Look up the word dou~loj ; then find and summarize the Christian's relationship as a the dou~loj of Jesus (2.b).

D) Look up the word ei)rh/nh ; then find and summarize the five uses it has in the New Testament (F. 1,2,3,4,5).

E) Look up the word lao/j ; then summarize the popular, specific and figurative meanings of the word in the New Testament (E.2,4,5).

F) Look up the word shmei~on ; and summarize the distinctive Johannine Usage of the word in the New Testament (D.III.2.a).

 

Lexical Exercise #3 [Due 10/15]

Use the Dictionary of New Testament Theology (4 volumes); find the INDEX, look up the assigned Greek words; find the English article on the Greek Word; then give the following:

Required: B,C,D Optional: A,E,F

A) Look up the Greek word ku/rioj , and find the English article; then give a summary of 'Jesus as the kyrios'

B) Look up the Greek word a)gapa/w , and find the English article; then give a summary of 'NT 5.b' concerning the agape meal.

C) Look up the Greek word kuriakh/ , and find the English article; then list the passages in the New Testament in which this word is used according to the DNTT.

D) Look up the Greek word yuxh/ , and find the English article; then give a summary of what this word means in Matthew 10:28 according to the DNTT.

E) Look up the Greek word a)kolouqe/w , and fmd the English article; then give a summary of "NT l.c" concerning this word's special significance where it refers to individuals.

F) Look up the Greek word a)fi/hmi , and find the English article; then give a summary of "NT l." concerning this word's usual religious sense or meaning.

 

Lexical Exercise #4 [DUE 11/3]

Use the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament: Abridged in One Volume, 1985. Translate and transliterate the following Greek words and then give the indicated information from the one volume abridgment of the TDNT:

Required: A,C,D Optional: B,E,F

A) Translate i(erwsu/nh ; then summarize the meaning for Hebrews 7:11-12 as indicated in the article in the one volume TDNT.

B Translate o)/noma ; then summarize the meaning from the section "F. The NT. 1.3 'Believing in His Name'" as indicated in the article in the one volume TDNT.

C) Translate presbu/teroj ; then summarize the meaning for Matthew 15:2 as indicated in the article in the one volume TDNT.

D) Translate sko/tia ; then summarize the meaning for John 12:35 as indicated in the article in the one volume TDNT.

E) Translate ui(o/j ; then summarize the meaning for Mark 1: 1 as found in section "D. NT. III. 1 'Jesus' Divine Sonship'" section of the article in the one volume TDNT.

F) Translate xa/rij ; then summarize the meaning for 1 Peter 2:19-20 as indicated in section D. 'The NT. 3.D' in the article in the one volume TDNT.

 

Lexical Exercise # 5 [DUE 11/19]

Use the Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament, 3 Vols., edited by Horst Balz and Gerhard Schneider (Grand Rapids: W. B. Eerdmans, 1993) to do the following lexical assignments:

Required: A,D,E Optional: B,C,F

A) Look up a)/nw and indicate what this word denotes in John 3:3 according to the EDNT.

B) Look up dw/deka and give the four passages where lists of the dw/deka appear in the New Testament according to the EDNT [section 4.b].

C) Look up e)kba/llw aid indicate what the special sense of this word is in Mk 1: 12 according to the EDNT.

D) Look up i(lasth/rion and give the two passages in the New Testament where this word is found according to the EDNT.

E) Look up no/moj and give what the two debated meanings for this word are in Romans 3:27 according to the EDNT [section 4.b of the article].

F) Look up xro/noj and indicate how this word is significant for First Peter according to the EDNT [see section 3.c of the article].
