Jeff Birmingham read the mission statement and welcomed new members. We briefly discussed GONA's activities and volunteer opportunities.
Newsletter: Birmingham reported that Loomis expressed concern about having enough time to get newsletter out to deliverers with some advanced notice. One possible procedure is that Loomis will call volunteers asking them to deliver after, instead of before, the newsletter is received. If the newsletter is completed by Tuesday, the newsletter will be delivered that weekend. If the newsletter is received after Tuesday, the newsletter will be delivered on the following weekend. The newsletter editor will be consulted about this plan.
Birmingham recently welcomed Great Harvest as a new advertiser to the newsletter and other companies have expressed interest in advertising. We are still looking for a volunteer to help find advertising. A. Emmons suggested noting in the newsletter that we are looking for advertisers.
Birmingham summarized two interesting articles about Greendale that were published in 1938 and 1943. The next newsletter will feature these articles.
Greendale Green Market: GONA is taking over the running of the Greendale Green Market. We are asking for volunteers to staff the Green Markets this summer. We will invite other local organizations to take a spot at the Green Market to publicize their activities or raise funds. Loomis presented several upcoming training activities, including a meeting of Southeast Wisconsin Farmeršs Market managers. B. Theirfelder and A. Emmons volunteered to attend this meeting. We can also learn a lot about farmers' markets from the farmers who attend many different markets. Loomis reported that the funding from the Promotions Committee will be limited to $200. About $150 of this will go towards purchasing the advertising magnets. We also will be notifying the Village that we will be taking over the Green Market and getting permission from them, and will also ask to be featured in the quarterly Village newsletter.
Youth Memorial Building: Birmingham attended the February 21st school board meeting, and reported what was discussed. He stated that the director of business service for Greendale presented a plan to use the Youth Memorial Building as a daycare facility. A complete assessment for rehabilitating the building has been completed, and a source of funding was identified. He also presented costs for running the daycare and anticipated a profit at the end of the year. The board will need to vote on this. Birmingham encouraged those supporting the project to write letters to the village, the Village Life, and the school district, since the board still needs to vote on the project. A motion was proposed and approved to have GONA write a letter in support of this plan. There will be start-up money needed for the daycare. Birmingham will be contacting other local organizations for support of the project.
Future activities: Birmingham will do a presentation on Greendale, and we also discussed inviting a UWM architecture professor who has studied Greendale to talk about the community. We also briefly discussed the idea of offering a home tour. Birmingham presented information on Ebenezer Howard, a city planner in England who developed the first garden community on which Greendale was based.
One group member brought up that he had gotten a letter from the village requesting that he conform to village guidelines. It was determined that GONA would not take any action on this issue.
