Greendale Originals Neighborhood Association (GONA)
Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, June 2, 2004, 7:30 p.m.
Greendale Library Community Room

Board Members Present: Jeff Birmingham, Jack Anderson, Cathy Loomis, Terri Knudson, Al Emmons, Virginia Emmons

Board Members Absent: Kathy Arciszewski, Margo Kuehn, Pat Geary, Kathleen Hart

The meeting was called to order by the president at 7:35 PM.

The secretary summarized the meeting minutes of the May 5th GONA meeting. The secretary recognized those volunteers who delivered newsletters to Greendale originals this month.

The treasurer reported that the balance in the GONA account is about $116.00.

GONA party: Karyn Birmingham and Julie Newmann met to start planning the outdoor party. The party will be similar to a big block party. Residents living in originals will be invited, and they may bring guests. The party is tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of August 29th. There is a possibility that the party may have DJ's who will volunteer their time (we would like to provide a tip). The food will be supplied by a local deli at cost. The menu will include sandwiches (e.g., brats, barbeque, hot dogs), drinks, corn, potato chips, etc. The cost may be $5.00 a plate for adults and $3.00 for children. We would like to charge as little as possible to encourage participation. We may borrow tables from a church and having people bring their own chairs. We would need a permit from Chief of Police to have the party and Karyn Birmingham is pursuing this. Those who come to the party can become members of GONA and receive special deals from the Village Life as part of their membership. There will be games for kids. Jeff Birmingham will work on getting inexpensive prizes and seeking out sponsors.

Newsletter: Joe Russ is planning to do July and August newsletter issues before the party. Joe would like to have someone take over writing the newsletter in September. Joe is looking for ideas to put in the section of the newsletter which shows a mystery picture of a Greendale original home feature. Jeff Birmingham has some historical articles to add to the newsletter. We now have advertisers for the newsletter. The goal was to have four business card ads. Discussed issue of the amount of space devoted to advertising. Need to have enough space for newsletter content, and have the lettering big enough for everyone to read. Also, need to realize there may be some months when we have no advertising.

GONA website: The number of visitors to the website has gone down. Joe Russ will be working on adding new information to the site. He would like to include executive board members' contact information on the website.

Good Experiences List: Al Emmons called some of the roofers on the list and confirmed that some recommend taking off the original tile roofs. The list was changed based on this information. Discussed concerns about need to have people who can work with unique aspects of the Greendale originals. Discussed several possibilities for others who are doing this type of work. It is important the work not be too expensive, because this may dissuade people from keeping their original roofs. We still need to actively look for more names to add to the Good Experiences List. We need names for a handyman (e.g., someone to clean gutters, etc.). We discussed whether to include other services, such as health professionals. People may find this information helpful, yet we do want the list to get too long.

President's report: Two of our members have volunteered to fund the purchase of T-shirts for fundraising at the Green Markets (starting on June 26th). We discussed how many of what sizes to buy, and decided to ask the person who will be supplying the T-shirts for a recommendation. We need volunteers to sell the T-shirts at the Green Markets.

By-laws: Copies of the bylaws were handed out. A motion was offered to pass the bylaws as they are. Discussion involved the percentages listed in article 12 and 13. There was concern that the percentages listed would make it too easy to change the bylaws and remove officers. It was noted that adequate prior notice must be given before such a vote. The motion was passed, and the by-laws were accepted.

New business: We discussed having less frequent meetings. We decided to keep meetings monthly at this time due to the upcoming party. We discussed options for future topics for speakers, such as information on mold, fire safety, crime prevention, and DPW activities.

Tips on Greendale original homes: One member stated that she painted over her already painted living room ceiling beams with white, high gloss paint and this turned out well. For those beams in their original condition, some have recommended not putting anything on the beams. One person stated that originally, Min-Wax products were used on the beams, and that these products could be used on the beams. One member stated that he had his floors professionally sanded, and it looked very good.
We discussed side venting from the crawl space. One member stated that it is important to uncover the vents in the summer to increase circulation of air (close in winter). Ice cream bucket covers make good replacement vent covers.

Meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM.
