Microsoft Java Chat Client 1.0j

This is NOT my freeware but it's here
because it is getting incredibly hard to find.

If you have Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 (also part of BackOffice 4.5) and you want to use the included Chat Service software to set up a chat server, you can use this version 1j Java chat client (mschat1j.exe) to embed a chat window in a Web page. That way chat participants wouldn't need a separate chat client program to participate in your chat room. They use their Web browser instead. This is preferable on PCs that are shared by multiple users such as in labs and libraries.

I had a horrible time trying to find this software on the Web when I was setting up a chat page so I decided to make it available here for download. The mschat1j.exe file is also contained in the Microsoft Internet Client SDK if you can find a copy of that (good luck).

Even though the MS Chat Service server is included with MS Exchange, it doesn't need Exchange at all to run. Just an NT server running IIS and the chat server package supplied with Exchange/BackOffice will get you a chat server.

Once you've got the chat server running, create an HTML file with a name like mychat.htm and paste the following code somewhere between the <body> tags. Create a directory (call the directory something like chatroom) under the wwwroot directory on the chat server. Then copy the mychat.htm page file and all of the files that come with the mschat1j.exe client into the chatroom directory.

<APPLET CODE="MSChat.class" ARCHIVE="mschat.jar" WIDTH="590" HEIGHT="450">
<PARAM NAME="cabbase" VALUE="mschat.cab">
<PARAM NAME="port" VALUE="6667">
<PARAM NAME="room" VALUE="#MyChatRoom">
<PARAM NAME="autodisconnect" VALUE="true">
</APPLET>

Change the value of the room parameter to match the name of the chat room you set up on your server but be sure to leave the pound sign (#) in front of the room name.

Note that the Web page containing the above code MUSE BE on the same IIS server that is running the MS Chat Server software.

The mschat1j.exe file is a self-extracting archive type of file. Simply extract the files into a temporary directory and copy all of them to your chat server. The default.htm file that is included in the archive list all of the applet parameters. The URL to the Web page containing the above code would them be something like:
http://www.mywebsite.com/chatroom/mychat.htm
