Notes:

Matti Mattsson Hemming was born on the Putikka farm in Närvijoki. His baptism record in the Jurva records show that his birthday is Sept 11, 1831 and that his baptism occurred on Sept 15, 1831. Subsequent Communion Book records show his date of birth of 11/9/1831, listed under the same parents as his birth record. In the Communion Book records dates appear in two different ways, mm/dd/yy and dd/mm/yy. Apparently his month and day of birth got reversed once he was recorded along with his family in the Communion Book records. (Source: Jurva Birth/Baptism records & Jurva Communion Book records)

His father, Matts Johansson Putikka, died on Christmas Day 1839 when Matti was eight years old. The Putikka farm eventually went to Matti's uncle, Johan Johansson Putikka (b. 4/26/1814), after Matti's grandfather Johan Johansson Putikka (b. 10/5/1780) died on March 24th, 1858. When Matti was 19 years old, he started to work on other farms in the area such as the Mantti farm (1851) and the Hautala farm (1852-1854). The Hautala farm was his maternal grandparent's farm. He also worked on this farm with Jacob Johan Henricsson Haapakoski, which was the youngest brother of Serafia Johan Henric's daughter Haapakoski. (Source: Jurva Communion Book 1851-1857)

Matti and Serafia were married on July 19th, 1855. They moved to the Haapakoski farm in Närvijoki, which Serafia's famly operated. They brought their first two children into the world while they lived at the Haapakoski farm. Matts was born on 6/17/1857 and Anna Lisa was born on 8/17/1858. On August 5th, 1860, Matti and Serafia moved their young family to the Hemming farm near the Miettyla village within the Jurva parish. Hence the name change, for Matti it was first Putikka, then Mantti, Hautala, Haapakoski, and finally Hemming. Matti and his family retained the Hemming name for the rest of their lives. They lost three children during the years 1861 through 1867: Ulrika Lena (d. 1/30/1861), Elias Nestor (d. 6/19/1862), and Jakob (d. 12/27/1867). Jakob succumbed to croup (strypsjuka) in the height of the Famine Years (1865-1869). The Communion Book records list Matti as a torppari or a tenant farmer on the Hemming farm. The response from the Jurva parish shows that Matti and his family lived in Humppila during the years 1868-1878. Matti and Serafia had two children born away from Jurva: Amanda Sofia born 8/14/1873 in Hollola and Tuomas born 12/6/1876 in Humppila. The Hollola village is much further east in Hämen Laani, near the city of Lahti. Humppila is alittle northwest of the city of Tammela, with the Jokiioinen parish in between. Both Amanda and Tuomas were brought back to Jurva for their baptisms, which is very uncommon. Even though they lived away from the Hemming farm during these years, Matti was still somehow associated with the Hemming estate, returning to the farm in 1878. Anna Lisa and young Matti Hemming moved to the Humppila parish in 1879, a year after their parents moved back to the Hemming farm. Amanda Sofia (b. 8/14/1873) moved to the Jokioinen parish in 1888, which is a neighboring parish of Humppila. Only one of the children was confirmed in the Jurva parish, which was Anna Lisa under the Haapakoski farm name. I assume that all other children were confirmed in the Humppila parish. I have found no moving record for Herman Mattsson Hemming. I did find a moving entry for a Herman Mattsson Heminki moving to the Alahärmä parish in 1885, but I think that this is a different person. The response I received from the Jurva parish thought that this was our ancestor. There was a Hemming farm and a Heminki farm within the Jurva parish. Never was the Finlandized spelling of the Hemming name used with our ancestors. I personally believe that Herman stayed in Humppila after his parents moved back to the Jurva parish in 1878. I am attempting to confirm this via direct contact with the Humppila parish and the Internet. (Sources: Jurva moving records and official response from Jurva parish)

Matti and Seraphia had one more brief move to Laihia, a neighboring parish, for the years 1881-1882. They then moved back to Mieltylä and the Hemming farm. Matti died shortly after moving back at the age of 52 on April 21st, 1883 of a burning fever, or poltetauti in Finnish. Seraphia passed away on December 20th, 1924 at the age of 89 years old.
