Newport Investment Management Software
Newport History Builder

Here's a way to help you with installing history or doing "What ifs" in Newport.

You need to install the program in a directory other than the one you are using for your investments. To do this:

  1. Set the date on your computer back to the date from which you want to start your history.
  2. Reinstall Newport using your Newport for Windows floppy disk, and when prompted for a directory, change the name to HISTORY or some other name, but not the one where you originally installed Newport (usually NEWPORTW).
  3. Once the new copy of Newport has been installed, start the program (don't reset the date), and select Add a Stock from the Maintenance Menu. Add the stocks(s) using the price on the date you chose.
  4. Exit the program.
  5. Start the program again, this time resetting the date to the current date. The program will tell you your prices are not up to date, and ask you to fill in the interim data on a weekly basis. As you enter the weekly prices, if the recommendation along side the price entered shows you should do something, you can go to the stock screen, make the trade, and then come back and continue updating your prices. If there is a stock split or a stock distribution it must be entered in the week it occurred. The stock price will also likely change that week.
That's it. If you were doing this to see what would have happened with a stock you don't own, there is nothing to do but look at the stock screen and graphs to see how well AIM would have done with this investment.

How to add history to your Newport data files.

If you actually own this stock and want to add this history to your active Newport database, there are two things you need to do.

  1. Copy the history and notepad files (symbol.HST and symbol.NPD) you just made from the HISTORY directory into your NEWPORTW directory.
  2. This is the tricky part... You need to add this investment into your STOCK.NPT file.
    1. Make a copy of the STOCK.NPT file that is in your NEWPORTW directory. This way if something goes wrong you can copy it back again. Either copy it to a disk or with a new name.
    2. Print out a copy of the STOCK.NPT file that is in your HISTORY directory.
    3. Then, using the DOS Editor or Windows Notepad, open the STOCK.NPT file in your NEWPORTW directory. You need to add this investment to the list you see in STOCK.NPT. The new investment should be typed in at the proper alphabetical position. So you may need to place it between some of your other investments. Type in the line that pertains to your new investment EXACTLY as it shows on the copy you printed.
    4. Before saving the file, place your cursor at the end of the last line, press delete a few times to be sure there are no blank spaces at the end of the file, and then save the file.
The next time you bring up Newport, your investment and all of its history will be there.
