PARROT FEVER This is the story of how all of us kids came to live with mom. This story is told by Kokomo, the Blue and Gold Macaw, my mom (Irene) gave me the nick name Moee. I was her first bird, she really wanted a cockatoo, like Fred on Baretta, but she saw me at the pet store and I was so cute, talking and doing chin-ups on my perch, rolling over on my back, that she fell in love with me and took me home, after thinking it over overnight. Then comes the bad characteristic my mom acquired. She got a bad case of parrot fever, do not ever get this or you will end up like my mom, not that it makes her unhappy or anything, but it is a lot of work taking care of all us kids. After she had me for a few months and loved me and learned so much about me, she decided to get another Macaw and to my dismay Sly, the male Greenwing Macaw appeared at our house. I didn’t mind because I was still Queen of the Roost, Sly was very shy and very quiet and never did anything or even wanted my mom’s attention so I was very happy about that. Then a few months after Sly came to live with us my mom disappeared all day and guess what? She came home with another Macaw, a Hyacinth named Devon. As you can well guess I was not happy about having another female in the house to contend with. And at first she was shy but then she began to like my mom and I found out I was supposed to share mom with her, not on your life, so we bicker a lot to this day and it’s been four years now. But I was here first. Then mom bought a Moluccan cockatoo baby which she told us about but we didn’t see this baby because it had to be weaned before it came home. So she left us to visit this baby a lot. The nerve of our mom hey! And even before this baby came home, mom felt sorry for Sly because he was still shy and he never moved or anything, she didn’t even have to keep him in a cage anymore because he never moved. You can bet we didn’t like that because we had to be in our cages when she was gone and he didn’t. How unfair can you be. So mom left one day and guess what, she came home with another Greenwing Macaw named Red. She thought that Red was another guy and he would be a pal for Sly. But guess what! Red turned out to be a female and Sly just fell in love with her and wouldn’t let mom near her or him anymore, they even chased her around the house and tried to bite her. Talk about love at first sight. Well mom decided to get a big cage for the newlyweds and had a four by four by four foot cage made for them and they were happy. Then she put up a nest box for them because they were always making out, can you believe that. No sooner had mom put up the nestbox than Red laid eggs. Mom was shocked and she had to do a lot of learning about babies. Luckily the first clutch was infertile. But that didn’t stop the new couple, as soon as time was up and no chicks they had another clutch, and this time there were two babies. Well mom was a little nervous but she was a trooper and left the babies with the new parents for six weeks and was so happy and surprised that Sly and Red were such good parents. I watched my mom try to get those babies out of the nestbox, boy were they fat, they weighed as much as the parents. Then I had to watch mom hand feed them with a spoon and I was jealous so I would get in line for a spoonful too, and mom gave it to me and everyone else in the house. What a good mom! Mom did this for clutch after clutch, boy those two were sure making up for lost time. But after seven babies mom had to separate them because she just ran out of room for anymore kids. So that is the story of our happy little home. If you have any questions for mom or would like to just talk to her, she would be glad to hear from you, just e-mail her. If you think this story is long you should hear what was left out!
