IMPROVISATIONS FOR ORGAN AND SAXOPHONE

Seven freely improvised duets by Gary Verkade (organ) and Steve Nelson-Raney (soprano and sopranino saxophones) recorded in 2001. Gary Vekade plays 3-manual and pedal Casavant organ with mechanical key and stop action.
Gary Verkade was born in Chicago and grew up in the south suburbs. He studied music, including organ performance, composition, form and analysis, counterpoint, and musicology at Calvin College and the University of Iowa in the United States. In 1978 he received a Fulbright grant to study at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen, Germany. He has performed new music throughout Europe and the United States, including that of Luciano Berio, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Ernst Helmuth Flammer, Jörg Herchet, Mauricio Kagel, György Ligeti, Scott Roller, and Christian Wolff. He is presently on the faculty of the Musikhögskolan i Piteå, Sweden. In addition to this Penumbra CD, he has recorded on the innova, Mitra (Germany), and Arton (Switzerland) labels.

Steve Nelson-Raney's other Penumbra Music recordings include breathing (with Hal Rammel) and Cutting Off the Edge of Time (with Jon Mueller).

This CD is released in a limited edition of 300 copies.
