The Assault on Parenthood

by Dana Mack, 307p.
Simon & Schuster, $25.00 © May 1997

To be a good parent today is to commit nothing less than an act of political and cultural subversion, by fighting the government and our child-rearing institutions all the way, argues author Dana Mack. Through focus groups and private interviews, parents painted a devastating portrait of what it means to raise children today, even in the most stable of family environments. Mack contends that parents across the country are mounting a strong and concerted effort to reclaim their children from the negative influences that threaten them. This "counter-cultural movement" includes parent-driven alternatives to public schools, lobbying for family-friendlier workplace policies, and strong support of the Parental Rights movement.

Dumbing Down Our Kids

by Charles J. Sykes, 368p.
St.Martin's Press, $23.95 © Oct. 1995.

Another runaway hit by Charles Sykes, author, education critic and guest speaker at the 1995 PRESS Education Conference. After having scrutinized higher education in previous works, (Profscam and Hollow Men) Sykes sets his sights on the decline of public education in the primary and secondary grades. He points the finger at "the schools themselves and the values that dominate American education in the 1990's". Harsh criticism is heaped on educators who emphasize student feelings over learning, as witnessed by the avalanche of "self-esteem" programs, the Outcome-Based Education juggernaut and political correctness movements. Filled with easy to read statistical evidence and anecdotes to support any parent going up against the education "BLOB". This is a MUST read for all!!!

The Outcome-Based Education Movement

by Jeffrey M. Jones, M.D., Ph.D. 113pp., 128 refs., 8 figs., 8 tables. © 1995

Shortly after Dr. Jones learned of plans to institute transformational OBE in his daughters' school district, he decided to find out just what OBE and the various "philosophies" espoused by educators were all about. As a Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, he had access to its library system, public records, and works of scholars throughout North America. He produced an impressive monograph on the OBE movement, dealing with OBE at the local, state, and national level. When educators are questioned about OBE, parents often find them setting up smoke screens with statements like... "Well, I don't know what OBE really is." Dr. Jones' monograph has been used by Wisconsin state officials and journalists such as Robert Holland of the Richmond Times-Dispatch to determine what OBE is. He presents a bounty of information in an entertaining way. (Order Form)

Educational Philosophies: A Primer for Parents

by Jeffrey M. Jones, M.D., Ph.D., 52 pp. © 1995.

Have you ever attended a meeting where you offer an idea and an educator says, "Well, that's just fine Mrs. Smith, but your ideas just don't fit our district's philosophy?" Educators are fond of talking about their philosophies. Sometimes they are just using high sounding rhetoric. Or they imply that a philosophy is somehow research based. In the primer, Dr. Jones has collected a series of entertaining essays dealing with various educational philosophies and ideologies. Each essay can stand alone; however taken together they amplify the value of the individual writings. All are thoroughly referenced. The essays include the following titles: Behavioralism, Cognitive Learning Theories of Instruction, Holistic Constructivism - - A Rejection of the Scientific Method, Choosing Effective Instructional Programs, Learning to Read and Whole Language Ideology, and A Critique of the NCTM Curriculum Standards. These essays will arm parents in debates with others about educational philosophies. (Order Form)
